Pros And Cons Of The Grapefruit Diet
FAD DIETS THROUGH HISTORY
By Helena Childress, B5

Fads have always been popular through history. Especially in the Victorian Era people always wanted to have perfect bodies and beautiful figures. But these diets were usually not very healthy or good for those who used them. Some are even life threatening or deadly to their participants. Others were downright strange or didn't sound like diets at all.
One such program is the Cookie Diet. While it may sound like the opposite of healthy, it’s creator Dr. Sanford Siegal advertised that you could lose weight by eating specially crafted low calorie (but high priced) cookies for breakfast, lunch, and snacks. For supper you could have whatever you wanted as long as you were being reasonable. He created

The Grapefruit Diet is a lot more structured, with planned meals for twelve days. However the Cookie Diet can last however long you wanted it too. They are also differences when it comes to the way weight is lost. The Grapefruit Diet does so quickly while the Cookie Diet usually takes a lot longer. They also are targeted at different people. The Cookie Diet is for people who have trouble cutting back on sweets and the Grapefruit Diet is for those who wish to lose weight quickly. However they are both targeted at people who want to lose weight without starving oneself. The cost is also different. The Cookie Diet is usually more expensive (again around $50.00 for one week of cookies alone) while the Grapefruit Diet* would be about 3.00 per day (Only counting for 2 grapefruits (costing about $1.50 each) and not the other meals.) However they both had special foods to eat. While they both are not the best for you, in my opinion the Grapefruit Diet is slightly better for the user than the Grapefruit Diet. This is because while the Grapefruit Diet does not provide enough calories, the Cookie Diet is not very nutritious for the user. You are after all eating cookies for most of your

Medifast claims to be a low calorie, low fat diet that many people have joined. The plan is based around high protein shakes, bars and soups. The most popular choice is the 5 and 1, which consists of 5 Medifast meals and 1 “lean and green” meal. The caloric intake claims to be somewhere between 800 and 1,000 calories per day; however, when I entered a daily diet sample into the Diet Analysis program, I found a significant difference. The sample recommended a Medifast ready to drink Dutch chocolate shake for breakfast. Mid morning, a suggestion of Medifast scrambled eggs with a dash of parsley. Lunch was the first half of the lean and green meal, suggesting six ounces of roasted turkey with one cup of steamed mustard greens topped with one teaspoon of olive oil and salt and pepper to taste. The mid afternoon snack was a Medifast strawberry creme shake blended with ice and water. The remaining portion of the lean and green meal was suggested for dinner and included Medifast’s cream of broccoli soup with one-half cup steamed broccoli added for texture. A night snack of a vanilla shake was also shown. Using the dietary recommendations in the dietary analysis program for me, this sample meal plan only provided me with 54% of the calorie intake, or 773.24 kcalories. With a RDI of a minimum of 1200 kcals, this diet is insufficient in meeting metabolic goals, thus requiring supplements to enhance metabolism. Also, the carbohydrate requirements were 54.98 g, when I have a recommendation of 160-231 g per day. The fat requirement of 32-55 g per day were also not met, only providing 17.85 g. The only energy nutrient requirement that was met, and actually exceeded, was the protein…

The five day recording compared to the 24 hour dietary recall was much more precise and well detailed. The five day recording will accurately represent a habitual diet of the individual, unlike the 24 hour recall. The pros of the five day recordings are that it accurately represents a person’s day to day diet, helps keep tract of exactly what the individual ate, and helps keep track of how much an individual is really eating. Eating can sometimes be mindless. For instance, when an individual is eating, they are checking their e-mails, watching TV, or having a conversation with someone; therefore, keeping track of what the person is eats is a form of reality check. The cons of the five day report is that, recording the diet is more difficult…

Don’t expect foods using refined carbohydrates or “bad” carbs like flour and sugar to be part of the menu. Complex carbohydrates (obtained from whole grains, vegetables and fruits) which are “good” carbs and other foods that rank low in the glycemic index are preferred. These delivered meals can be supplemented with fresh vegetables and fruits. If you detest calorie counting, then this is a program you will definitely like because it takes the calorie counting out of dieting and makes the program easy to follow. Keep in mind that even if you pay extra to order specific meals, as opposed to letting Nutrisystem choose your meals, they have the right to substitute meals if their inventory is low on what you requested. Some users have reported that up to 30 percent of their order was substituted for meals they found unappetizing. Unfortunately, once the meals stop coming, members feel unprepared to make their own meals based on the Nutrisystem…

Eating no junk food seems to make sense when you are trying to lose weight, but it can also cause a different type of diet destruction for you. Although banishing junk food from your daily consumption is a healthy option and will make for faster weight loss results, it may not affect you in the ways you’re expecting. Many people start a diet such as this to lose weight, but it doesn’t last long; the biggest reason is that the dieter has nothing to look forward to throughout the weight loss process. If you are working out and feel the need to eat some type of junk food, then do so with portion control. A great time to reward yourself is when you reach a new limit and feel proud of yourself for doing so, such as staying on the treadmill an extra two minutes or doing ten more crunches than you used to be able to do. Small goals and guilty pleasures will make weight loss seem like less of a chore. Dieters will be less inclined to give up on the diet if they focus on the smaller steps of the process. Instead of debating how they are going to lose twenty pounds before next summer, people will be focusing on what they have to do to eat that cookie on Saturday. Another reason junk food shouldn’t be completely shunned from dieters is because recent studies are showing that the low-fat food and diet drinks we are consuming during a diet aren’t as great as we…

The legislative branch is the most powerful branch in government. The legislative branch is in charge of making and passing laws. They have the power to override a president’s decision, stop laws from being passed, and basically control all decisions the governments makes. The legislative branch, also called the congress, consists of the House of Representatives and the Senate. The reason for two houses of congress is to balance out the concerns of smaller but more populated states against states that are larger but with less population.…
