The North Koreans have rattled the Japanese and they need someone there for defense. A year ago, Japan might have had reason to feel comfortable inching away from America, with the US military stretched and a new, dovish president seeking to avoid confrontations. In early 1945 after japan surrendered during WWII the military of the U.S. never returned the island of okinawa, in fact they built more forts on it. They did not the return the island until 1972.
