Material – Epoxy Resin
Application – epoxy resin is used in adhesive (Araldite) and in the production of laminates and reinforced plastic composites. It is also used to coat the inside of food cans.
Properties – it has good heat resistance and is hardwearing, it is formed by mixing together liquid resin and hardener to trigger cross-linking, it also is not harmful to humans which is why we use it to coat are food cans.
Advantages – it is not harmful to humans so can come in contact with are food and has high mechanical and thermal properties and is water resistance.
Disadvantages – it can be expensive and requires critical mixing.
Thermosetting Polymers
Material – Melamine
Application – melamine is used in electrical
plugs and sockets, control knobs, heat-resistant handles, kitchen utensils and plates.
Properties – it is hard and tough and resistant to heat allowing it to be use in heat-resistant handles.
Advantages – melamine can be produced in a variety of colours making it more astatically pleasing, it also has a good resistance to solvents and is stain resistant.
Disadvantages – it is very expensive and only has Limited resistance to concentrated acids and alkalies.
