Nicholas Ray was a well thought out director and sought to make his film thought provoking. Something about his movies including, Bigger Than Life, with all it flare, made his films both entertaining and provoking. His movies sparked conversations and critical thinking of different contemporary issues and problems in the world ( Senses of Cinema). In the case of Bigger Than Life, this film really scared people at the time who where unsure of the effects of cortisone. Though, while the issue of cortisone usage in this film is at the center, there is a lot more that one can read into. The film also illustrates the norms and conformity of suburban and family life. There is monotonous feel around Ed and his suburban life, which I am sure people watching it could and did probably relate
