Overview-
Prostate enlargement is a common condition in men as they age. Also called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate enlargement can cause bothersome urinary symptoms. If untreated prostate enlargement can block the flow of urine and cause problems in the urinary tract or kidney problems. There are several effective treatments for prostate enlargement. In deciding the best option you will evaluate your symptoms, prostate size, other health problems and treatment preferences. The treatments for prostate enlargement include medications, lifestyle changes and surgery.

Diagnosis-
The benign prostate enlargement is usually diagnosed based on the typical symptoms, as previously described. The tests are not always necessary to confirm the diagnosis. However, one or more tests may be recommended to rule out complications, to rule out other causes of the symptoms and, sometimes, to assess the severity of enlarged prostate. The following tests may be performed:
• A doctor may examine your prostate to see how big. This is done by inserting a gloved finger into the anus, into the rectum to feel the back of the prostate gland. The size of the bladder can be evaluated by examining the abdomen.

• Inhibitors of 5-alpha reeducates- These drugs reduce the prostate by preventing hormonal changes that cause the growth of the gland. They include finasteride and dutasteride.
Your doctor may recommend surgery if the medication is not effective, or if you have severe symptoms. There are several types of surgery for prostate enlargement. All reduce the size of the prostate gland. The decision on which type of surgery use is based on a number of factors, including the size of the prostate, the severity of symptoms, and what treatments are available.
