Part three of the portfolio is about professional responsibility. It focuses on how professionals analyze and reflect on their practice. Teaching is different than most professions in which teachers have no established pathways for a promotion. It is up to the individual to participate in reflective practice, analyzing the good, the bad, and the improvements that can be made for the benefit of the students. Constant self-analysis and self-directed improvement are essential parts of a teacher’s job especially because instruction is going to vary year to year with each new group of students. Teachers collaborate with each other for many reasons. It helps us share ideas and learn from one another, hopefully gathering new ideas to try within your own classroom to keep students engaged in the learning. At my student teaching placement, there are certain days built into our schedule where we are able to meet and discuss important topics and to evaluate our teaching together as a team. This meets twice a week. At these meetings all push in support are present as well as the classroom teachers. At other schools, teachers use practices such as co-teaching to teach subjects that they feel strongest or most comfortable in. Teachers are always working together for the benefit of students; planning, supporting, collaborating. Using a guide to reflect on these experiences-either individually or with colleagues-is an entry to improving our teaching,” (Hole &McEntee, 1999). My journal entry follows their reflective practice, which allows me to think in depth about my experiences at the professional development day. It allows me to analyze in depth about what happened, why it happened, why it is important to look at further, and how the events will impact my future learning as an educator.
