Learning and Cognition Scientists and psychologists have studied the topic of learning for more than a century, and merely scratched the surface of how the brain functions in respect to learning and cognition. Factors, such as learning is a basic function of human beings, and humans are born with specific innate abilities, however it is still somewhat of a mystery how the process of learning is accomplished. Within this essay, a definition of learning, the component of behavior concerning learning, two diverse methods of learning, and the affiliation linking learning and cognition will be examined.
Definition of Learning
Learning is one of the most difficult concepts to define. …show more content…
Intellectual skills creates individual competence and ability to respond to stimuli, verbal information, which is memorizing names, faces, dates, and numbers (Gagne, n.d.). Along with the previous two, there are motor skills and attitudes. A paradigm of this the many steps in learning the English alphabet. A child learns the alphabet through listening to the sounds, viewing the letters, and sounding the letters vocally. Subsequently, the second stage of learning is changed behavior such as repeating the sounds of the letters. Therefore, the cognitive process of learning has begun when the learning stage becomes repetitive, and the child commences to include the alphabet in the daily routine.
An example of cognitive learning is a child learning about table foods. He or she is becoming aware of texture, shape, sound, and taste of food. Eventually, the child comprehends the foods he or she enjoys. The child will learn something new with each meal, whether it is a new flavor, texture, or scent, new information is added to the child`s memory bank. The cognitive process of learning begins with repetition actions. Thus, the short-term memory stores the learning process.
