Defense Mechanism/Ego Defense * The protective, coping strategies adopted by the brain to shield us from painful feelings. * They are learned usually as early in the childhood stage and are considered maladaptive when they become the predominant means of coping with the stressors. * The method by which the ego can solve the conflicts between the super-ego and the id. * They operate actively and involuntarily without the person’s awareness. * Sigmund Freud was the person who developed the concept of defense mechanisms, however it was his daughter Anna Freud who clarified and conceptualized them.

Why do we use defense mechanism? * People use defense mechanisms when internal or external stressors become too great. * To protect us from threats to our self-esteem and other sources of anxiety and maintain our self-image * To manipulate, deny or tamper with reality * To help people to minimize anxiety to achieve goals in an unacceptable way and deal with unwanted thoughts
TYPES OF DEFENSE MECHANISMS
1. Denial
- The simplest type of defense mechanism wherein it is the refusing to admit something has happened. * Alcoholics are notorious for denying for denying they have a problem when everybody sees it.
2. Rationalization (“ I give myself a cover story)
- It occurs when you unconsciously give yourself a false explanation of your behavior and misleading also other people to justify your behavior. * A student might blame a poor exam score on the instructor rather than his or her lack of preparation.
