Nothing can be more devastating than having to deal with chronic pain. It not only prevents you from functioning properly but consistently takes a toll on the way you live. When approaching different managements of pain, the most common temporary solution is the pharmaceutical approach. But that is just what it is, temporary. Physical therapists are evolving and creating long-term solutions on how to not only manage but on ways to treat pain. How can we do so? By incorporating and expanding our knowledge and education about pain management through research and the understanding of pain for each individual.
Within the article it states that in order to further progress in the field of physical therapy, a PT must optimize their pain management acumen. One of the steps listed within the article is to keep up with new research including the basic knowledge of pain psychology. I found that particular step within the article the most important due to the attention and concerns that comes along with being properly informed when treating patients. A good understanding and basic knowledge of not only physical pain but the mental effects that come with such help PT’s to better understand a patient’s discomfort. Understanding the fact that pain is not something that should be scaled but something that is different and personal to each individual patient. A patient’s treatment should be based on the individual’s incapability’s due to their pain.
