I am writing this letter on behalf of Thomas Woodrow Wilson, a young man I had the privilege of teaching for four years as an undergraduate. As a teacher of Advanced Placement United States History at Princeton University (formally known as the College of New Jersey) for the past few decades, many gifted students have entered my classroom, but Woodrow’s potential really stood out to me. I base this not solely on his scholarly accomplishments, as Woodrow was not always a stellar student, but rather on his leadership abilities, self-sufficiency and determination to reform the institutions around him. Even as an undergraduate, Woodrow organized a student club to discuss public affairs. He also joined the American Whig Society on campus, actively leading debates on points of government and how they could be improved.…

Lost Angels: Skid Row Is My Home is an investigative documentary that gives us the untold story of the homeless and disadvantaged living on Skid Row. Skid Row is a name given to fifty blocks radius in Downtown Los Angeles whose residents tends to have a lower income or are homeless. Many people view the homeless as being dirty, poor and even lazy; it is very rare that we wonder why how they came to be in such a predicament. For many on Skid Row their battles are mental illness and grave poverty. The documentary introduces us to eight different but very similar individuals living on Skid Row; they tell us their very different stories and then explain their similar experiences living on Skid Row. We meet a transgender Caucasian male, an African- American mother of three, an old Caucasian female and her African American “fiancé”, they all suffer from mental illness in one form or the other and there is even an ex Olympian who battled through substance abuse. The only difference between these people and us are certain circumstances and situations. The film just sheds light and gives understanding to the fact that yes they are homeless, yes they lie in the street but they are people just like me and you. Watching this film had me literally questioning why we are socialized to believe being homeless is demeaning and a social taboo.…

Quality leadership is a telling sign of a successful organization. When given the opportunity to guide or direct others, a leader is capable of drawing individuals or groups together to accomplish certain goals. Given the responsibility to address a problem that had developed over a span of many months concerning a cult (an unorthodox or misguided group of extremist) called MOVE, newly elected Philadelphia Mayor, Wilson Goode did not exercise his authority as the elected leader by working meticulously with the other city officials and offices to shut down MOVE operations and protect the city’s residents from their presence. His inaction caused tragic results in which eleven people died. Wilson Goode’s failure as a leader in this situation is significant to the understanding of the characteristics of high-quality leadership due to the belief that prior to this tragic situation, Goode had demonstrated good leadership choices in other not so tense situations. There were certain factors internal and external that led to his downfall.…

    I. INTRODUCTION Singapore has grown in many ways over the last 40 years to become a city-state that enjoys a high level of economic growth, political stability and most importantly, a sense of safety and security. It was not a smooth journey, as the country experienced its turbulent periods in the 1950s and the 1960s, characterised by problems of political instability, communist insurgency, secret societies, unemployment and communal riots. Today, Singapore’s crime rate is low by international standards and has declined successively for 9 years from 1989 till 1997. Crime rate has only edged up slightly by 5.2% in 1998 when the entire South East Asia region plunged into financial and economic crisis. The rise was mostly attributed to theft of handphones and cash cards, and immigration offences. Amidst the rapid modernisation of society, much of the transformation from the old crime-ridden town to a safe city today can be attributed to the Singaporean government’s tough stance towards criminals and criminality in the form of strict laws and heavy penalties. Apart from the strict laws and rigorous enforcement, the improvement of the social and economic situation helped to control crime. Over the past 15 years, the Singapore Police Force (SPF) has made two significant innovations in the area of policing in light of social and economic changes. The first being the introduction…

The Arab Spring has created opportunities for countries across North Africa and the Middle East to redesign their constitutions. There are ongoing debates on whether these countries will adopt the Anglo-American model or look at other paradigms. Political leaders and scholars have turned to a number of academic fields such cultural studies, sociology, economics, and political science in attempt to answers some of these questions. However, no other field of study will provide more insight into the development of these new government structures than comparative public administration (CPA). Simply put, it is the study of comparing two or more public administrations by using multiple disciplines. This definition, however, does not sufficiently describe the complexity of this field or its contributions to other academic areas, government employees, and country leaders. Perhaps the area in which CPA provides the most aid is in its cross-national analysis. Through this research, countries are able to learn from one another. CPA is not limited to cross-national comparison though as it evaluates different administrative processes and systems within countries. To fully appreciate CPA, however, it is necessary to understand how politics factors into it, its progression over the years, and its analysis towards delineating future challenges to public administration.…

Woodrow Wilson 's article “Study of Administration” gives its current readers the brief idea of how government and its people viewed administration in the past as well as informing the readers of the implementation of administration. The article starts by telling the audience that science of administration is too large of a topic and should not be in a sub category of political science. Although the two categories are rather similar Wilson uses a German writer named Biuntschli as an example for stating the difference of the two. Wilson (1887) writes:…

Comparative Public Policy Analysis examines the courses and consequences of public policies on contemporary democracies, through a strong interdisciplinary frame work. According to Hiedenhiemer states that comparative public policy “relate to the dynamics in the social and economic systems, but the primary focus is on explicitly comparative analysis of how states differ in the manner in which their policies are politically grounded” (1985:442). His argument revolved around various thresholds of visibility- the development of policy as comparative cross-nationally, comparability–The ability to compare policies (type of method undertaken), conceptual Coherence-universality of definitions and models across boarders; North America and Western Europe and durability- comparative studies subject to the various reform measures. A comparative study is critically important in policy analysis and process because it provides an environment for policy evaluation, feedback and more efficient and effective policy formulation.…
