Most unions in America are aligned with one of two larger umbrella organizations: the AFL-CIO created in 1955, and the Change to Win Federation which split from the AFL-CIO in 2005. Both advocate policies and legislation on behalf of workers in the United States and Canada, and take an active role in politics. The AFL-CIO is especially concerned with global trade issues.…

In an effort to organize themselves to better their situation, laborers created unions that ultimately proved to be largely ineffective. Among the first to be organized was the Knights of Labor, which was open to all workers, even women. The Knights were poorly organized and lacked a central direction, so it was unsurprising when it declined and then, after a failed strike against Gould railroad, disappeared altogether. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) appeared even before the Knights began to decline and became the most important and enduring labor group in the country. It differed from the Knights in that it rejected the idea of one big union for everyone and embraced instead the idea of an association of essentially autonomous craft unions. It also differed in that it represented mainly skilled workers and was generally hostile to the idea of women entering the work force. The AFL supported the immediate objectives of most workers: better wages, hours, and working conditions. It hoped to attain its goals by collective bargaining, but was willing to use strikes if necessary. This willingness to strike resulted in the AFL being associated with radicalism and anarchism, an association that turned public sentiment against it, and doomed the organization to be widely ineffectual. Militant labor…

As a member magnet, stating everything the members wanted and needed. This is what it stated: “The American Federation of Labor and congress of industrial organization is an expression of the hopes and aspirations of the working people of America. We resolve to fulfill the yearning of the human spirit for liberty, justice and community; to advance individual and associational freedom; to vanquish oppression, privation and cruelty in all their forms; and the call of solidarity, to grace the planet with these achievements. We dedicate ourselves to improving the lives of working families, bringing fairness and dignity to the work place and securing social equality in the nation” (Visions and Missions). The AFL also came with three main goals they would carry out. The First goal was to convince companies to recognize unions and to agree to (collective) bargaining, the second was to push for closed shops – meaning that companies could only hire union members; and the last promote eight hour work day (The American Vision). They…

The American Federation of Labor was an association of trade unions starting 1886, rising out of an earlier Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions founded in 1881. The AFL's president, Samuel Gompers, was convinced that unions open to workers of all types of skills within a given industry, called industrial unions, were too undisciplined to withstand the tactics that both government and management had used to break American unions in the past. The answer, was craft unions, each limited to the skilled workers in a single trade. According to Gompers's "pure and simple unionism," labor should not waste its energies fighting capitalism; I ts sole task was to hammer out the best arrangement it could under the existing system, using strikes, boycotts, and negotiations to win better work conditions, higher wages, and union recognition.…

An issue that matters to me is the stopping of gun violence. Some facts I found is that people can buy guns at gun shows without background checks in 33 states. The gun lobby, led by the NRA, has given over $21 million to Congress since 1990 through the sales of firearms. An important one is that every 20 minutes, a person dies from gun violence in America. If guns weren’t so easy to access it would be a lot harder for these incidents to happen.…

Dating back to the beginning of the industrial revolution, the American Labor movement in the United States began its existence due to poor working conditions and exploitation during the beginning of that time. Labor unions in the United States today function as legally recognized representatives of workers in numerous industries, but in recent years have seen their greatest growth among service sector and public sector workers. Activity by labor unions in the United States today centers on collective bargaining over wages, benefits, and working conditions for their membership and on representing their members if management attempts to violate contract provisions. Although down from the peak membership they achieved in the third quarter of the twentieth century, American unions also remain an important political factor, both through mobilization of their own memberships and through coalitions with like-minded activist organizations around issues such as immigrant rights, trade policy, health care, and living wage campaigns. (Labor, 2007)…
