'Public And Private Language' By Richard Rodriguez
It was not easy knowing what my grandmother was trying to tell me in Spanish. I would never understand her until I would tell my Father to tell me what she was trying to convey to me. In the story “ Public And Private Language “, by Richard Rodriguez, I surmise I can relate this story to my Grandmother. Rodriguez states in his story that his Dad has over time come to be more quiet as they begun to speak more English. As for the previous sentence, my Grandma would calm down after getting the hint I won't ever learn her language. Ultimately, she would need to be the one to learn English if she wanted to speak to me. My father took my request to let her know she would need to speak to me in English so I would understand her. Time progressed,

“I wasn’t trying to hurt him! He has ຕາຂປີ!” I protested as my teacher led me to the corner. The phrase appears as confusing written as it does spoken, and my teacher could not comprehend. Apparently neither did my classmate, who yelped when I pointed my finger at his eye.…

How would I deal with this situation? First of all, I would try to compromise with the parent, that the child could possibly speak English in the setting and speak their own language at home. Explain to the parent this may affect their holistic development and exactly what it will affect and how. This may be too big of a compromise, so if not I would look into getting a translator into the setting to help the child develop and learn.…

Rodriguez begins to become more involved in his classroom by his new grip on the English language. He shares fewer and fewer words with his mother and father. His tone now transforms into guilt. As Rodriguez's public language becomes more fluent, he forgets how to speak Spanish. During American colonial times, the native peoples of the new world clashed often with the English settlers who encroached upon their lifestyle. Many horror stories and clichés arose about the natives from the settlers. As one might read in Mary Rowlandson’s Narrative, often these disputes would turn to violence. To maintain the process of the extermination of the natives alongside Christian moral beliefs, one of the main tenets of colonial life was the belief that the natives were “savages”; that they were morally and mentally inferior to the English that settled there. As is the case with many societies, certain voices of dissent began to spin. These voices questioned the assertions of the English about the natives. They refused to accept the seemingly immoral acts committed by both sides as an inevitable process. And they wished to learn more. Among these voices rose that of Roger Williams.…

When working with adults, we can ask them directly how to accommodate communication or work out for ourselves that a person cannot speak English. My twins have a friend in school who is Turkish and their mother struggles with English, we communicate by using Google translate on our mobile phones. It is also important to establish a level of formality required as not everyone wants to be called by their first name, some will prefer to make appointments rather than just “turn up”. It is also useful to be aware that written communications can be daunting for some people, a home-setting link book is a good idea, but you must check that the parents or carer’s are comfortable with reading and writing.…

Sometimes, I become mad at my mom thinking why I have to speak for her. But, I do not want her to speak either because if she does they will not give her the same amount of respect or attention that they would have given to me for my better English. I believe it is wrong for people to categorize individuals by the way they speak. Unfortunately, I had categorized my mom by the way how she speaks. When my mom speaks in her “limited” English outside, I feel ashamed thinking that people will think that my mom is unsmart.…

However, the main problem was that my parents didn’t know one word in the English language yet, they managed to find shelter for my brother and I while balancing multiple jobs. I was around the age of two and I caused my parents the most strain on their lives. As I grew older I faintly remember being handed off to least 3 different babysitters, starting from 5am in the morning till 6pm in the evening. At the shy age of five I would now comprehend my parents struggle with various issues such as taking care of me, their youngest child, or massive language barrier. In addition, to my parents having a difficulty learning English, so did I. I wasn’t surrounded by the English language, I didn’t acquire American friends or listen to my family speak English around the house; instead I learned every morning by watching Dora the Explorer on…

I struggled with speech-language until high school. It was difficult to pronounce certain words, so instead of speaking my ideas or opinions, I would stay quite. The lack of proficiency in English-made me insecure to speak in front of the classroom. Many people believed I was a shy child, yet he/she did not know the real reason why I dislike participating. School children would tease each if he/she had a Mexican accent. That made me even more worried. The fact, that I saw my father continue to struggle with the English language it always resonated with me. My father would get frustrated when he could not pronounce certain words. My father would always take my siblings or me to doctor’s appointment, insurance companies, and banks to translate for him. It was difficult being a child not knowing what professionals were saying. They would use big words that I did not understand at the time. My father would get upset and tell me why I could not translate what he/she was…
