Sister Adele Scholarship Analysis

At the age of six, my life took an unexpected turn when my parents migrated to the United States and I was forced to adapt to a new culture. At the time, I had no idea this drastic event would ultimately benefit and shape who I am today. I believed this would ruin my self confidence and progress in my education. I constantly battled to lose the label of the new, shy girl in class who blushed whenever she was called on. New situations constantly arose helping me learn about myself in the process. This drastic move taught me many lessons and allowed me to grow as a person. On my first day of school, I was not able to communicate with my peers as Spanish was all I knew. Learning English became my priority and I worked meticulously every day to close the barrier between my peers and me. Although I struggled at first with my education, I learned to become independent, friendly, and resilient. The Sister Adele Scholarship would help me continue attending college and pursue a teaching degree and become a bilingual teacher. By becoming a bilingual elementary teacher, I would not only empathize and support students academically and culturally while they balance bilingualism in their education; I would also have the ability to connect with their families. I can add value to my teaching through my diverse background by breaking language barriers as a Spanish speaker. I've worked a lot with the Multicultural Student Union at Western Oregon and have found effective ways to connect with students of many different backgrounds. I am a person people can come to when they need help or are facing adversity.
