Public Shaming In Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter

Public shaming has historically existed for a long time,like the wooden stocks in the medieval times and the tar and feathering in the American Revolution. The Scarlet Letter(Source A)was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, “Is the Internet a Mob with without Consequence?”(Source C) by Nick Bilton and the “Price of Shame”(Source B) by Monica Lewinsky. If people like Tyler Clementi was brutally harassed by Public humiliation, it should be stopped because it can create more problems than fix them. Remember that your topic sentence should address one of those keywords: professional, personal, or social. Primarily, it can turn from a few words of hate to personal threats. In (source B) it states that Monica was receiving rape threat like it states here “I was branded a tramp, tart, slut, whore, bimbo,” and that relates to (source C) because in the passage Justine Sacco tweeted that “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!” and before she landed she received
threats to rape, shoot, kill, and torture her. The mob also found her family and they threatened her family. Even though she was wrong in many ways she got fired from her job, but the extreme threats were not needed.
Another reason is that it has social effects in their lives. In source A, Hester who is was put in jail for being adulter is hated by everyone of the town and people yell at her and it states in the book . She was getting judged for her sin and it affected her social life at the town. In Source B she was talking about a Rutgers University student who killed himself because he was in a gay relationship . It states “When the online world learned of this incident, the ridicule and cyberbullying ignited,” that caused him to kill himself because of social media.
It can affect your professional life.
In source B, Monica Lewinsky had affair with U.S president at the time Bill Clinton. The affair was recorded by her friend and it affected her professional life, like it states “Overnight I went from being a completely private figure to a publicly humiliated one worldwide.” This shows she went from being a normal private human being to a person who was getting shamed by the public. In source C, A person named Pax Dickinson, a chief technology officer sent a sexist tweet that affected him professionally cause it got him fired and it he was shamed by people until he got fired. It stated “He too was subsequently attacked on the web until he was ousted from his job.” Even though he was fired people kept attacking him.
Public shaming harms people and it affects people everyday. Public shaming has been around for a long time. It affects people personally, socially, and professionally. If it is still alive a lot more situations like Tyler Clementi will
emerge.
