One example of Odysseus’ cleverness is when he encountered the Cyclops. He used his crew to put the Cyclops to sleep after the Cyclops got upset that Odysseus and his crew ate his food. So while the Cyclops was upset, they tried to make a proposition. Odysseus and his crew wanted to share the food and the clothing with the Cyclops and they wanted the Cyclops to open up the door so they could take the goods with them. The Cyclops didn't agree
and got upset so Odysseus gave the Cyclops wine and the Cyclops became sleepy with the music that the crew was playing. Then they sharpened a wooden stake and stabbed the Cyclops in the eye and then the crew escaped.
Another example of cleverness is Odysseus’ interaction with Circe. She tried to keep Odysseus on a island that he got stranded on. His men went out to seek food and no one returned except a pig that came running through. He trusted his men when one said that it was another crew member. He went to investigate and he used his resources to get to the top where his crew members were. It also found out that Circe was using him and he found out and gathered up and left.
Some would say that if Odysseus is that smart, why did he act so dumb. He was looking for revenge and making really bad choices that cost him his crew. He also acted dumb by letting his crew fend for themselves by making them get their own food when he had some. The treatment that he gave his crew was poor and in my eyes that is one of the most unintelligent thing he could have done. Overall, Odysseus is still very resourceful and clever. He was able to survive all the adventures because of the way he approached each obstacle.
