Queen Victoria served as Queen of Great Britain and Ireland from 1837, and as empress of India from 1877, until her death in 1901. She was born Alexandrina Victoria on May 24, 1819, in London, England,she was an only child.
Victoria’s father died when she was eight months old and her mother became a domineering influence in her life. As a child, she was said to be warmhearted and lively. Educated at the Royal Palace by a governess, she had a gift for drawing and painting and developed a passion for journal writing.

Queen Victoria tended to use her considerable influence to promote causes that interested her personally. Strongly influenced by her husband, with whom she worked in closest harmony. She made it possible for working class people to participate in politics. Queen Victoria believed that men should be treated better than woman. Queen Victoria was the longest-reigning British monarch, ruling the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland for 64 years. She was fiercely independent and although she faced dwindling direct political control, she strengthened the monarchy by redefining its role in British
life.
Victoria and Albert built royal residences at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight and at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and became increasingly detached from London. They had nine children, including Victoria, later the empress of Germany, and the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII. In 1861, Albert died, and Victoria’s grief was such that she did personally. Strongly appear in public for three years. She never entirely got over the loss, and until the end of her life she had her maids nightly lay out Albert’s clothes for the next day.
Disraeli coaxed her out of seclusion, and she was impressed by his efforts to strengthen and expand the British Empire. In 1876, he had her made “empress of India,” a title which pleased her and made her a symbol of imperial unity. During the last few decades of her life, her popularity, which had suffered during her long public absence, increased greatly. She never embraced the social and technological advances of the 19th century but accepted the changes and worked hard to fulfill her ceremonial duties as head of state.
Queen Victoria was an extremely successful leader and made lasting impacts on british society. She was crowned at only 18 years of age. She changed British history in good ways. She helped change British into a working society. Queen Victoria continued her royal duties to the end. Her reign had seen Britain through a period of great changes—the Industrial Revolution, the expansion of the British Empire, and a shift of direct political power away from the monarchy.
