The party moto is used throughout this book multiple times. The party motto is “War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.” This is unusual because it is comparing unlike things which brainwash or intimidate the entire population by using propaganda slogans and forcing the people to think that way. This persuades the entire population into believing this slogan. This would lead to people to being misled and fear the government.
3. The Newspeak is the official language of Oceania and devised to make the ideological needs of Ingsoc, or English socialism. Use mainly for communication, either writing or speech. Newspeak was developed and adopted for all instead of oldspeak. This gives medium of expression for worldview and metal habits. This consolidates the language to make it simpler. Removes any religious or rebellious thoughts that the citizens might
have.
4. A big brother is typically a person to look up too and looks out for you. Usually a person that would care for you also. But instead, the Big Brother controls the citizens and doesn’t look out for them and puts the people in fear. The tone and mood of the Big Brother in the story creates fear and an atmosphere that people are always being watched. Compared to a person that looks out for you. “Big Brother is watching you.” Is used to show and remind the people that they are constantly being watched by the government and to be careful about their actions. The connotation of the word brother in “Big Brother” creates a connection between the citizens and the big brother. Since he is constantly watching the citizens, it creates pressure for them to follow all the rules and not go against the government. Which more resembles a mother or father who forces you to follow their rules rather than a brother. The Big Brother in the book is not fulfilling the role because they do the opposite of what it is supposed to do. The Big Brother who is controlling and enforces rules fulfills a parent figure or boss rather than a brother.
