Montresor is witty and intelligent. He lures Fortunato into his trap and takes his revenge by burying him alive. Fortunato is rich and respected. He prided himself on his connoisseurship in wine. Fortunato wears motley, a multicolored attire of the court jester or fool, and conical cap and bells for the carnival event. Later he puts on a mask of black silk and a roquelaire, which is a knee length cloak. It represents the culture of that time and richness of his wealth. Montresor wears a mask, which also represent his two faces. One of the faces is simple ordinary businessperson and the other is yearning for revenge and can deceive and go to any extent to take his revenge. The motto is “no one attacks me with impunity.” This motto represents that every action will have its own consequences. There is no forgiveness. The coat of arms represents that Montresors were a great family whose achievements are remarkable.
