Quinn's Masterful Essay 'Naked'
In Quinn's masterful essay "Naked" there is one particular imagine that stands out to me. She jots down, "Grandma always wanted to be a dancer. Or a singer, or an actress. She wanted the neon swivel of stage lights, wanted to feel nylon hugging muscles as she moved. Instead she had eight children. Her stomach stretched and loosened, hung like tired elastic. Dishwater split the skin around her nails years ago."
This particular image resonated with me because it's an imagine I can personally relate to. My mother had me at the tender age of 16, shattering her dream of becoming an olympian. The predicament she was in prohibited her from achieving things she had once dreamed of. My mom sacrificed some of her best years to support me and give me

Growing up I never understood why my sister and I were so different, at least in my dad’s eyes. The most painful thing was I knew that he loved my sister more than me. When I was bad I got a beating; when my sister was bad, I still got a beating. My mom would always be there to save me even though she knew it would cause a huge fight with my dad. Fortunately my mom was a smart woman and she divorced my dad.…

The main reason I returned to school is to be able to be the first in my immediate family to graduate from college. My mother raised my two sisters and me as a single parent with very limited resources. I barely ever saw her due to that fact that she had to work at two different jobs. She wasn’t the most affectionate mother but showed her love through actions rather than words. Very seldom did we have deep conversations but one conversation that stands out in my mind is when she said to me “Fernando, I am sorry I can’t provide the same things your friends have. I didn’t even have the opportunity to continue my education. I only went to school up to 6th grade because my mother forced me to work or I would have to leave the house. I want you to have a better future. That is why I brought you all to the…

My mother, “Regina Hopkins,” has been a positive influence in my life. She has raised 6 kids all by herself as well as earned a Bachelor’s degree in nursing from a City College in Gainesville, Florida. My mother has been through pretty much everything a person can go through outside of war and was still able to be there and provide for all 6 of her kids. In high school, my mother wanted to play football and couldn't because she was a girl and back-in-the-day women were not allowed to play football with the guys. However, she remained strong by raising 6 kids and independently took care of all of us on her own. My mother has several qualities that I would love to develop. The first quality she has is balance; she certainly knows how to make…

It was the beginning of my freshman year of highschool when my mom began to see bugs in my food, my mattress, and any place imaginable, or rather the beginning of my mom’s hallucinations. That year I found out my mom was addicted to crystal meth. I could not believe it. We went from watching A&E’s Intervention together, a show about drug addicts, to my mom becoming a drug addict. That is when my world came crashing down. It was the start of one of the most important times of my life and knowing that my mom would not be there to mentally, emotionally, and often physically, support me was tough. It was extremely hard not being able to eat because my mom swore there were bugs in my food to my mattress being thrown out because “it was infested with bedbugs.” It was tough having to call other people to give me a ride to school because my mom was not capable of doing so. Not being able to go to sleep because I was worried my mom would leave in the middle of the night because she was jacked up on meth. But this was just a regular day…

In my life, I find that the luckiest thing I ever had was a mother whom really cared about me; the most unlucky thing that has ever happen to me was a heart disease I had since I was young. My dad was worked from morning to evening every day, and my mom was the only one to take care of me. Every day, my mom was busy in between home and the hospital. After I came out of the hospital, my mom was strict and over protective to me because she worried that my heart disease would happen again. Although my mom was only being protective of me, I wanted to get out of my mom’s control, I had things I wanted to do.…

This sacrifice taught me that sometimes in life we as people have to make very challenging choices in order to receive the best long term results. Growing up, she always reminded me to think for the future and not just in the now. She has also taught me to become independent. By being forced to be a mother figure at the young age of 17, she had to learn how to everything on her own, raise 10 children, and take care of her ill father. This is the reason why I always try my hardest to get the best out of life. I feel that I should always take advantage of every great opportunity. If my grandmother could accomplish so much throughout…
