Night
Mentioned the word “night” always brings people infinite reveries. It can be luxuriant romance, children’s dreams or deep thinking. In Elie’s story Night, what people feel is endless fear and sorrow. It is a tragedy of a nation, a brutality of another nation, what is more, a silence of the whole world. In the story, a millions of Jews were kidnapped from their homes by the German Nazis and were forced to work in concentration camps because of their Jewish heritage. In the German concentration camps, the Jewish people were forced to work every day and night; they were not treated like a normal human; they suffered huge pain and lived like walking corpses’ lives. Some Jews were cruel and vicious towards each other because of the strict treatment they had received from the Germans, because under these conditions they only cared about their own survival. People not only can see the pain that the Jews suffered, but also understand how these sufferings twisted people’s morality. Elie and his father were separated from his mother and sister, whom Elie would never see again. Elie has a very strong relationship with his father in the story. They love each other and would not be separated. However, the relationship between Elie and his father, Chlomo, changes throughout the memoir.
At the beginning of the memoir, according to Elie’s description, he thought there is a distance and lack of understanding between his father and him. Wiesel felt puzzled that his father did not encourage him when he wanted to study the Kabbalah. Usually, if a child told his father he was interested in some fields, the father will feel happy. He will encourage his child to choose whatever he likes and will support his decision. What Elie’s father did is not usual. He said to Elie, “You are too young for that. Maimonides tells us that one must be thirty before venturing into the world of mysticism, a world fraught with peril. First you must study the basic subjects, those you are able to

His father was a busy community leader and he did not have much time for his family. In the beginning of the memoir, Elie noted his father was more concerned with others than with his family. As the atrocities of the camps escalated, it was a major goal of Elie’s to stay with his father. In the camps, their relationship changed drastically to one of protection. Elie’s outlook on family was very different inside the camps. His father went from barely caring for him to being a protective father and depending on each other for survival. After seeing the rest of his family disappear, he knew his father was his last relative so he clung to him. However, as life in the camps continued, there were times Elie resented having to take care of his father and began to blame him for their troubles. An example of this was while his father was being beaten. Elie thought “... if I felt anger at that moment, it was not directed at the Kapo but at my father. Why couldn’t he have avoided Idek’s wrath? That was what life in a concentration camp had made of me …” (54). The camps were filling Elie with anger and blame; he was upset because his father was getting hurt and his innocence was stripped from him. This is what the camps were trying to accomplish - break people down so they could not rebel successfully and in this case they succeeded. Another example of a time when Elie disliked having to take care of his father was…
