How do you determine which information is noteworthy?
You first need to go back to the basics and find out if the information is from a credible source. Meaning is it updated, backed up by verifiable information, and from someone with experience in that field or topic. If it is, you can move on. Next you will need to determine what material is appropriate to your topic and discussion at that moment. Is the material from the source go with the topic you have chosen and will it add anything to your paper versus just filling up space. If the source is research on clinics or groups of people, you should know facts like, who funded it (is it biased because of this), was the survey controlled or random, what was done in the survey/research, is their more to come or is this the only needed and of course, find what organization or institution that provided this information.
How do you determine whether to summarize, paraphrase, or quote a source?
When determining whether to summarize, paraphrase or quote from a source you will know by the type of paper and response you want to get. When quoting from a source, you are copying the material as it is written exactly. You quote something when you want information directly from the source to support your ideas and research. When you summarize, you are putting someone elses words and ideas into your own words. When you summarize you still need to cite your source to give credit for the part of your work. Paraphrasing is a little tricky and somewhat similar to summarizing. When you paraphrase you are also taking someone else’s work and putting it into your own words but the difference is that you are only using bits and pieces, instead of rewording an entire piece. It is also very important to give credit when you paraphrase information in your own paper.
