The criminal justice system ensures the safety and protection of society from criminal offenders. The process of the criminal justice system begins when a criminal offense is reported to law enforcement officials. If required, an investigation begins, leading to a warrant and arrest. Following the arrest, bail is set and a preliminary hearing is scheduled. If the defendant is indicted, a trial date is set. Providing the defendant does not waive the right to a jury trial, a jury is selected and the trial begins. If the defendant is found guilty, a sentence is imposed, usually within a few days of the jury’s verdict. If the defendant wishes, he or she can then appeal the guilty verdict and sentencing, thus beginning the trial process again. Police officers, detectives, prosecutors, and defense attorneys make great efforts to ensure justice is served swiftly and fairly, thus creating a strong and effective criminal justice system.…

Today these functions are carried out by the police, the courts, and corrections. During a trial a case continues with the court system which will weigh the evidence to determine if the defendant is guilty. If the person is guilty the corrections system will…

All of these agencies are expected to be fair, impartial, professional, and must have integrity. The police enforce the laws, investigate crimes, arrest offenders, ensure the safety of the community, maintain public order, provide emergency services, and also provides essential rights and freedoms for all. The court conducts fair and impartial trials, decides the criminal cases, and ensures due process. It determines the innocence or guilt of the individual that is on trial, upholds the law, impose sentences on the guilty, requires fairness throughout the whole justice process, and protects the rights and freedoms of anyone that is being processed in the justice system. The correction facility carries out sentences that have been imposed by the courts. It provides safe and humane custody, supervision for all offenders, and protects the community. The correction agency is also charged with reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating convicts back into society. Plea bargaining in the United States is a controversial issue because the practice of plea bargaining is necessary as long as the United States has high crime rates and insufficient facilities and personnel to try all cases; plea bargaining allows the flexibility necessary if the system is to respond with any degree of concern for the circumstances of individual cases, however, it may also entice defendants to plead guilty to crimes they did not commit rather than risk their constitutional right to trial.
