Race Is Socially Constructed Essay

Many sociologists believe that race is a social construction. Social construction is defined in plain English as something that we the human race created on our own. When sociologists say that race is a social construction they obviously do not mean that we created the variance in physical features of many humans. What they mean is that we coined the term “race” and use it as a separator and an identifier of a large group of people. For example, Black, White, Asian, Hispanic these are race classes our society has created and defined. I believe the European explorers were the first constructors race. As explorers travel across the seas to new lands they became in contact with different humans whom had built a society much different than European society. These new societies
This new society was only judged by its physical differences. As they wrote about these places, explorers classified these people as a different race because theses people were so different from themselves. As history went on these race classifiers were used again an again. From this race was constructed. We as humans use our sense of sight more than any other sense but our sight is limited. All that the sight of an untrained eye can see is differences. I do not believe we indented to define race but it just manifested from trying to classify something that was not quite the same as something else. Most humans do not recognize similarities we initial recognize what is different first. Racism on the other hand is something I believe that some members of society intended to create. The Europeans believed that they were better humans than these people that they came in contact with. The Europeans referred to these people as savages, which is hypocritical because Europeans are decedents of savages or Neanderthals themselves.
