Carson faced many struggles throughout her life. In the end, nothing slowed her down from her ultimate goal, protecting the environment. Rachel Carson’s belief that DDT was harming the environment was proven and argued wrong by the government. They stated that other contaminates were more harmful and poisonous to humans than DDT. It was actually that people just weren’t taking care of themselves, which inspired Carson to write a book about human health. Her book, Silent Spring published on September 27, 1962, was a big hit. Rachel Carson argued against the federal government to tell them that they needed to let citizens know that pesticides were becoming a hazard. Even with all the negativity Carson received from her book, Silent Spring, it later became more popular and …show more content…
well-known across the world.
Silent Spring was chosen for the Book-of-the-Month Club as well as the news program, CBS Reports. Unfortunately, Carson got very sick with cancer during the time her book was aired on CBS Reports. Although this slowed Rachel down, she continued to fight through it. By writing Silent Spring, Rachel made it a point to get rid of DDT because it was badly affecting the environment. She also realized that some insects were immune to pesticides. Carson even said that New York dairy farmers could no longer sell milk because they had used pesticides to keep moths away from their farm. Even though some people disagreed with Rachel, much more people were inspired by her book to write their own motivating stories.
Silent Spring made such a big impact to the environment and influenced many people as well.
For example, Vice President Al Gore shared that Silent Spring had a huge impact on him, personally. It made him realize how important the environment is and made him want to become more involved in it. It also inspired him to write some of his own books. He stated, “Her example inspired me to write Earth in the Balance. Her picture hangs on my office wall among those of political leaders. Carson has had as much or more effect on me than any of them, and perhaps than all of them together.” Although Rachel didn’t intend to, she spread the word all over the world about environmental awareness and saved lots of wildlife from dying. In the end, Carson and her book, Silent Spring changed the world
forever.
Rachel Carson succeeded not only by spreading awareness about the harm pesticides were doing to properties, but by inspiring so many people across the world. No matter what challenges she faced, she was able to overcome them. Carson should have been more recognized for what she did to the environment because she was a real hero. Just remember to tell yourself one thing every day, “I am always more interested in what I’m about to do than in what I have already done,” because we all know Rachel was.
