To begin with racial stereotyping is one of the biggest problem in America. For example Amadou Diallo was a young black man who was shot in 1999 when New York City policemen opened fire on him because they thought he was reaching for a weapon. The policemen thought because he was black he was pulling out a gun. This is not the 1st time an event like that happen! Like with Michael brown who was also killed by a policemen who saw him walking with a hood on and saw he was black and also said he thought he was up to trouble and reaching for a gun and shot him. Me as an African American myself I was not pleased hearing and reading about these events. The stereotype about black people and crime is very wrong! Not all black people are the same. Yes some do make bad dictions but don’t we all. That shouldn’t mean you should stereotype all black people as bad people. Also an …show more content…
example that happened in my life is about a student named Bashir. He once said something to me in math class that really had me thinking! He said “I wish I was white”. I ask “why?” He replied “because I want to make a lot of money and for black people it’s harder to make it big in this society”. This is so true, but not only that but if a 8th grade boy says something like that then that shows a lot about society and stereotyping today! Another example is stereotyping people based of their religion. In an article I saw it was saying how most nonbelievers think Christians are homophobic. That stereotype is wrong. For one I am a Christian and I think being gay is fine. I have no problem with gay people. I am friends with a lot of gays believe it or not. Also my friend’s sister is gay and still goes to a Christian church. An article I read also said that Christians don’t like people that sin! The thing wrong with that statement is that everyone sins and yes it’s not a good thing but it doesn’t (shouldn’t) change the way we look at someone (well not for all Christians). Most of the stereotypes based on religion is straight up ridicules.
Lastly sexist stereotypes are unfair and unacceptable.
For example my friend once said all guys who wear pink are gay. I heard this stereotype many times. And truthfully I think this straight up one of the dumbest stereotypes in the book. Pink is a color and a color shouldn’t determine your sexual preferences or who you love. Another stereotype is only men are strong or men are stronger than women. This maybe be true in some cases but not in all. I am stronger than a lot of guys in my grade. Gender should not play a role in how weak or strong you are. Another one is about sports. Like how girls shouldn’t play football or basketball because they are not as good as boys. I think that’s not true at all I know a lot of girls who can hoop and get down on the football field. That’s why they have a women’s basketball organization. Your gender should effect how you see or feel about
someone.
In conclusion stereotypes are straight up disrespect and false. People stereotype people all the time without even trying. One way you can help is to tell people about stereotyping and how is wrong and can really harm someone’s life. Society like to put us in these boxes/groups and try to tell us what we should be like. So no, not all black people like fried chicken or watermelon or Kool aid. That’s just another stereotype that can easily give the wrong impression on somebody.
