Racing In The Rain Metaphors
Dog Days are Over
The novel The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is a novel about a dog named Enzo, who desperately wants to become a human. This is a novel about family, loyalty, and love, and reveals what it means to be human through the point of view of a dog. The plot is about the sudden loss of Denny's (Enzo's owner) wife, Eve, which pushes Denny’s in-laws to sue for the custody of Zoё, Denny's child. Stein’s use of dual timelines characterizes the inner human of Enzo’s consciousness; Enzo uses gorgeous metaphors to compare the conflicts in racing to the complications of life, to aspects of life such as injustice, death and loss, and the general conflicts that every human will eventually have to absolve in their life. Distinctively visual Images and the ideas conveyed through them can both enhance or challenge our understanding of the world and humanity. Ideas associated with images can be powerfull enough to provoke further thinking and understanding of certain matters. This is greatly evident in the 1998 German thriller film “Run Lola Run” directed and written by Tom Tykwer together with the poem “Summer Rain” by John Foulcher. Through the use of strong images these two texts manage to express their main ideas such as chaos and its relationship with time. In “RLR” we witness the protagonists facing dilemma due to these two aspects of the world, seeking to overcome them with determination and love. Meanwhile “Summer Rain” shows the unpredictability of these ideas and their destructive power to harm or chip away.…

Unfortunately, in his new world, it meant nothing. It is just a game to fill in the time. He has lost his edge for he feels uncomfortable “For me, playing footy would never be the same. Here in Coghill, it would just be something to fill in the time – the endless, endless time”.…

Garth Stein in the novel, The Art of Racing in the Rain, tests how Denny’s, Eve’s husband and Maxwell, Denny’s father-in-laws, relationship guides their behavior towards each other, their fears through Eve’s illness and their personal love for her, causes them both to do things that held serious consequences. Stein supports his claims by contrasting their differences in handling the trials. The author’s purpose is to point out the dissimilarity in the way people handle sicknesses ending in death and the crisis the families sometimes go through afterward. The author writes in an emotional yet humorous tone for those who love dogs but for those who will enjoy a story of hope and love.…

The things the characters do and want ultimately brings them to their very own downfall. Throughout this essay, I talk about how these characters are just like every ordinary person and how our society is well represented by the different themes in each of these stories. One character is cruel and self-centered and all of that leads to her own death while the other is “unlucky” and her greed and want for wealth leads to her very own son’s death.…
