Now looking at the past few years in football in Europe, racism has not gotten any better. Mario Balotelli is a very well known player that symbolizes the new generation of non-white Italian players. (Doidge, M) He was born to Ghanaian parents in Sicily and then moved to Brescia on the other side of the country. (Doidge, M) At the age of two, Mario developed a life-threatening intestinal illness (Doidge, M). His parents were not able to pay for his health care and was fostered by the Balotellli’s(Doidge, M). In Italy, Mario could not acquire Italian citizenship until his 18th birthday (Doidge, M). One month later after his 18th birthday and stating that he intended to play for Italy, he was called up to the Under-21 team (Doidge, M).
The nickname “Super Mario” was given to his fans. (Doidge, M) During his years of football, Mario racked up a lot of accolades. He was named ‘man of the match’ after helping his team Manchester City win the FA Cup Final at the end of his first season. (Doidge, M) Just a month later, Balotelli scored the game winner for Italy against one of their biggest rivals, Germany.
