In our society, the meaning of race can have different ideologies, but it is not associated with being equal to one another. Bonilla Silva defines color blind racism as a racial ideology going back to the late 1960’s; keeping people of color below the racial hierarchy. He quotes the hierarchy is “developed by these groups to explain how the world is or ought to be” (Silva 10). The movie called Fruitvale Station based on Oscar Grant III stood out due to the fact it is based on colored people being discriminated by not using race as a factor of his death. John Steinbeck portrays racism on the ranch through the interactions or lack of interactions between Crooks and the other workers on the ranch. Crooks has been working at the ranch longer than most of the other workers and for the most part minds his own business. Despite Crooks being a nice fellow, most of the workers are racist towards Crooks. For example, many workers on the ranch use derogatory names when they speak or refer to Crooks. When Candy was welcoming George and Lennie to the ranch, he refers to Crooks as the "stable buck," which is a derogatory name to African-Americans. In addition, according to Crooks, other workers on the ranch claim that, "I[he] stink," which is a stereotypical idea white people…

Racism has repeatedly played a controversial role throughout the course of history. This is a topic fueled by the heated arguments of the parties on both ends of the matter, may it be the cry of the victim or defense of the offender. As described in the works of two members of ethnic minorities coping with the alienation they both faced in what is supposed to be the land of diversity, Firoozeh Dumas’ “The F Word,” and Brent Staples’ “Black Men and Public Space, racism is portrayed as a dark shadow cast upon those who may not seem to conform to the “norms” of western culture to the typical American. Such stereotypes and predispositions should not hold the power to classify and simplify human beings to one single standard of a certain background, as one single story or idea does not define an entire mass of people.…
