Rainfall Futures Contract
Rainfall Future Contracts
Throughout the year, there are different seasons that could have several impacts on many industries. To be precise, the elements of weather can actually impact a company and how well they do during the different seasons of the year. Rainfall is a part of our life in some areas, almost daily, and others randomly, affecting every business in some sort of way. Although we can’t predict or control the weather, there is a way companies can hedge any losses that weather could potentially contribute to. Using a Rainfall Future Contract does this. These help companies manage risk and access profit opportunity. Chicago Mercantile Exchange happens to be the largest trader of commodities and futures in the world. They are the world’s leading and most diverse derivatives marketplace. Rainfall futures have been growing substantially ever since they have become available. These contracts are now offered in ten locations. The futures and options on futures contracts enable market participants to manage exposure to rainfall. The demand for insurance on these potential risks were seen by a former wealth management advisor from Merrill Lynch, Jeff Hodgson, who quit that job and discovered an entire industry facing weather risk, launching the Chicago Weather Brokerage. Insurance and Rainfall futures work a lot like each other in which there is a possibility you get paid for paying a piece of the total gain you could receive. The difference between actual insurance and rainfall futures is the fact that the investor doesn’t actually have to prove a loss to collect on the security. Rainfall futures are traded only from the months of March through October. The process of purchasing a rainfall future would be settled prior to the day. A predetermined amount is paid for by the party looking to hedge their risk. The contract outlines a certain amount of rain accumulation and whether it will pay out for over and under the amount of rain. Jeff

Over 5 million people spread across 20,200 communities hold a flood insurance plan. In the year 2005 the National Flood Insurance Plan (NFIP) had paid out close to 16 billion. The premiums paid by the 5 million have only surmounted to 2 billion, therefore the NFIP has the ability to reach out to the US Treasury. With the US Treasury enabling the NFIP to meet its financial obligations, the financial obligations are becoming the obligation of the taxpayers (GAO, 2005) (Wells, 2005). The goals of the NFIP are “to provide property flood insurance coverage for a high proportion of property owners who would benefit from such coverage, through this insurance coverage reducing taxpayer funded disaster assistance when flooding strikes and reducing flood damage through flood plain management and the enforcement of building standards (such as elevating structures)” (GAO, 2005).…

Weather modification, or cloud seeding, has long been recognized as a means to enhance existing water supplies. Cloud seeding had its beginnings in 1946 at the General Electric Research Laboratories in Schenectady, New York. Cloud seeding can assist nature in the formation of precipitation, with appropriate types and numbers of nuclei at the proper times and places. Cloud seeding projects have been carried out in over 20 countries. Projects are generally conducted either during the winter or summer months. While wintertime projects target the enhancement of mountain snow-pack within a watershed, summertime projects are aimed at enhancing precipitation and/or reducing damage from hail.…

study the link between weather and stock compares during 50 years the Dow Jones Industrial Average index and the daily cloudiness. The result is; there is a positive relationship. But how is that possible? Investors should not be impartial? I did not expected that when I give money to my bank, an investor could be influenced by a sunbeam. A possible explanation is that is the entry of sunshine periods who can be more optimistically when they are in a good mood which can results of the weather. So they can change stock prices, and affect all the market. Among other things, to reduce influence of routine weather variations on the economy, French Government set up controlled sales. French sales, are very controlled , it is during specific dates, and concerns only unsold clothes during a period. This reduces the influence of climatic on an example. In 2010, during all july. If spring and beginning of summer were cooler than expected, it would reduce shopping. So by decreasing prices, it could bring back customers in malls and increase consumption. This is an incentive policy to reduce influence of routine weather. An other way to reduce influence of routine weather, is to apply the idioms : «do not put all your eggs in one basket». For example, if I am the owner of a beer bar, my yield depends on sunshine. So if i want to redu hot chocolate. By this way, you reduce the weather influences, and sales during the all year are constant. However, we can not always diversify its business, for example in a theme park during a raining week, it is very difficult to attract clients, they will prefer to wait for next week. So it could be a good idea for them to get an insurance, or as we introduced this article they could buy a weather derivatives (or futures). Weather derivatives are financial instruments that can be used to reduce risk…
