I. Objectives The following are the objectives of the study:
1. To describe the plant species composition of a tropical forest and tropical grassland found in Mt. Makiling; 2. To compare the diversity indices of the two sampling sites. 3. To identify the most dominant species and rarest species in each site. 4. To identify the disturbances acting on the two sampling sites.
II. Methodology
In order to determine and describe the plant species composition of a tropical rainforest and tropical grassland, to compare the diversity of the two sampling sites,to identify the most dominant species in each site and the disturbances on the two sampling sites, the composition of a tropical rainforest and a tropical grassland biomes were observed.
A relatively flat area within the forest of Mount Makiling, Los Banos Laguna was located and a belt transect measuring 10x21m was laid out. Plant species found within the said transect were recorded and the number of each individuals of each species were listed in Table 4C.1. . The population and the relative densities of species per area were computed using the following formulas: Population Density = number of individuals of the species in the belt transect area of the belt transect Relative Density = number of individuals for a species total number of individuals for all species and the computed values were recorded in table 4C.1 also.
Still a part of the Mount Makiling, a tropical grassland located at Brgy. PutingLupa, Calamba Laguna was observed. A 30m transect line was laid out and plant species intercepted by the line was identified and listed in Table 4C.2. Horizontal cover of each species in the line were determined and the % cover and the relative cover (pi) were determined and recorded using the formulas: % Cover =
