Rainy Day's Didn't Get Me Down
Rainy Days Didn’t Get Me Down by: Marven T. Baldo

Rainy days used shed a magical glow to my young existence. Raindrops falling on the roof of our house are music to my ear. After the rain, I would look in awe and wonder at the clouds that from and the rainbow that appears shortly. I would also make a paper boat and have it cruise along the pools that the rain has formed in the road. If the rain is strong enough for me bathe in it, I would not miss the opportunity, and with my bike I would go around the neighborhood, exploring, taking in with delight the strong torrents that pour down on me. If I saw a basketball court with other boys playing in it, I would watch and would later join. Playing basketball in the rain gives a different kind of enjoyment. My exploring would take me to the farthest end of our neighborhood when the roads are already broken and there is already a wide field of grass below. When I am inside the house, the rain sets me in the mood for study. It enables me finish my homework early, giving me free time to read other books. Rainy days then were not so gloomy, and they didn’t get me down.

    3. Storms are represented as chaos and dangers throughout the novel. “The tat-tat of the rain against the tin roof, changed to a deafening roar that sound as if thousands of giant rocks were hurled against the earth.” (45) The author uses the expression of thousands of rocks being hurled to earth, in “the tat-tat rain . . . turned into a deafening roar.” The strong amount and force of rain is basically telling everyone to be safe, and take cover. If they do not be careful, they could be stoned to death. Another example is, “Mr. Avery stepped dripping the room . . . Theys ridin’ tonight.” (60) “A clap of deafening thunder drowned Mr. Avery’s words, then the rain quickened and the conversation was lost.” (62) Mr. Avery starts talking about the ridin’ tonight, Mama gets scared and suspicious, shortly after the storm drains out the conversation. The strong storm leaves important information to be unheard; this leaves the person suspicious and frightened.…

Sally just shrugged as they were trudging through the muddy, rainy, and crowded streets with wet coats. Everything was obscure, the gutters were filled with dirty water. Their drenched feet and boots whined as they stepped on the cemented sidewalk.Their bodies had gave up on providing heat and presented to the atmosphere’s harsh temperatures. The small droplets upon their face chilled their skin and faintly glowed due to the foggy streetlights. The wind howled and echoed into their ears while the rain pattered down upon the ground .The water flowed down along the sidewalk flooding the drain system. The cars zoomed by so fast that the puddles splashed like a tsunami. With only the streetlights providing illumination along the street, the road…

Late one night, in a small village in Africa, when all had gone to sleep, they came like ghosts in the darkness. They took Rain from her mother’s arms and bond her father. They were crammed into pens on the back of carts like animals. The men from the boat did not speak and Rain quickly learned not to speak to them, as they were whipped for talking. They traveled through the rain forest in the dark, and stopped near the coast where Rain and the others…

Weather is one of the accounts used to set the mood of the story. A Sense of Shelter opens up with a detailed account of the weather. The narrator sets the scene with bad weather. Opening with detailed descriptions of snow, thirty-two degrees temperatures, and a winter setting, readers can predict that this bad weather symbolizes something depressing and that the story will not be too uplifting. The bad weather, in this case, stands for the sullen tone that the author tries to convey. The snow in this story also can represent a clean slate or a fresh beginning, which, unlike what was stated above, is not necessarily bad. Just as the snow provides a blank canvas, the main character is getting an opportunity to have a new start by broadening his horizons outside of his familiar comfort zone through the confession of a long-lasting love and by eventually removing himself from the high school environment he had grown so accustomed to. This symbolic beginning to the story foreshadows that the tone of the story will be gradually depressing.…

Trying to go to school the next day. Standing in the shower thinking maybe if I dont get out I wouldn't have to start my day and move on with it all. But as the water turns to a shivering cold I realize it’s all too real. Pushing through the first five periods of the day, the last three seemed as too much. Feeling as if I will never be able to be happy again. All these gloomy days crafted me into who I am today. This whole experience making me grow up just a little bit faster, and a little more mature and understanding seeming as I already live the life as an adult, but only being a…

Growing up in rural Kansas was boring. Especially since I grew up in the seventies. There were no cell phones or game systems to occupy my time. My family had an old black and white television set. I loved to watch The Price is Right in the days before Bob Barker’s hair turned white. After the show was over, the only way to kill time was to play outside and wander down to the creek that ran parallel to our property. There was a secret trail buried in the wall of trees that lined our two acre yard. My brother and I would slide down the trail, landing on the dirt banks like explorers on a mission. Sometimes we would hunt for crawdads under rocks. Other times we would take our poles and fish. We never went into the water after the time I got bit by a gar.…

In a small, rural town called Arlington in Vermont, playing sports was a normal thing to do. It was nothing special it was just a way to waste time. There were only three sports you could play, soccer, basketball, and baseball. No football, hockey, etc. For me though, I loved the smell of the fresh grass when I was on the soccer field and the basketball courts. I loved when my parents watched me from the sideline and I could hear them cheering me on. It was just the best feeling to have. As I grew up in Vermont I never really knew how a big town or city felt like being in. I was in a school with only 400 kids in the whole high school! There was no loud traffic or packed mall, it was just farms and the pond. You had to make your own fun out of things. That’s why I loved to play sports.…

The rain fell down like tiny stones upon the weathered roof. It’s a gentle shower just now but the forecast said it is to get worse. The rain was making the atmosphere even darker and stuffier than usual. Save this. It is a normal Saturday night and as usual parents are out for some “time to themselves” I don’t have any brothers or sisters and I’m not aloud out because of the weather, so I’m left in myself for the night.…
