Racism is prominent theme throughout this play yet attempts to be not quite blatant. The author utilizes subtle cues to develop racist themes. It unveils in a similar mask to what society is expose to even til today. Most people are drawn to their similar race building a blinding segregation. That segregation later builds to a superiority and association and unfortunately being of the black race does not side with the side of superiority. It is something passed down by generation and this play demonstrates how race play a part in deterring some from the “American Dream”. Poverty is clearly an ongoing issue. This play investigates how poetry makes dreams difficulty to come true. Its presentation captures the reader because it is so easy to relate to. Financial stability is a critical issue in this play. It was the struggle that breaks down the psyche of Walter and Mama as all they want is a better life for their family. It projects on to modern day as that is truly the dream of many people. Poverty dictates the future of many making them feel defeated and unable to reach those dreams.
