The purpose of the ‘Rates of Reactions’ lab is to learn how to plan an investigative lab without outside help and to learn about the ‘Rates of Reactions’. This lab will require students to take responsibility for their own learning and use their prior knowledge to aid in the completion of this lab. In the lab prepared below, students will be learning about Rates of Reaction with varying concentrations of Alka-Seltzer with water.
Hypothesis:
I believe that the more water added to the canister with the Alka-Seltzer tablet, the slower the reaction will be because adding more water will mean there will be more water to disperse the Alka-Seltzer (basically this will decrease the concentration of the Alka-Seltzer in water).

Further research shows that the formula for the Alka-Seltzer tablet is C16H17NaO14 however, it’s only part of the tablet causing the reaction - the baking soda (NaHCO3) reacts with the water causing it to create sodium (Na) and bicarbonate (HCO3). From there, the bicarbonate reacts with a hydrogen ion from the citric acid to create water – H2O – and carbon dioxide gas – CO3. Now, knowing this and using prior knowledge, it is easier to understand why increasing the amount of water slowed the rate of reaction. With less water (for example, my second concentration), but the same amount of tablet, the concentration levels are higher because the solution is less diluted therefore this allows more gas to be produced. With more water (for example, my fourth concentration), the reaction is now more dispersed and less concentrated meaning the reaction will be …show more content…
Also, the reason behind the explosive reaction is the build of carbon-dioxide gas creating a pressure that eventually blows off the lid.
This lab helps students understand how to create a planning lab using a relatively simplistic experiment while also helping to consolidate the knowledge prior learnt in class. The lab also allowed students to gain a better sense of responsibility in taking the reins of their own learning and preparing for this
