I will be explaining how death is used in the book from the First World War and during the present day.…

Everyone has that one person that they look up to as a child. In the short story "The Grave," a young girl named Miranda grew up without a mother and is considered to be a tomboy. Her older brother, Paul, is that person she looks up to. She has a sort of epiphany after playing and digging through dirt in her grandfather's old grave with her brother and finding a gold ring which gears her into discovering her femininity. The author, Katherine Anne Porter uses symbolism to a great extent to illustrate the themes of redemption and Miranda's epiphany of deciding to accept and embrace her existence as a woman.…

    THE GRAVEYARD BOOK

Neil Gaiman is a prolific author best known for his legendary Sandman series, as well as other award winning novels and I with no hesitation can say that The Graveyard Book (also award-winning) is up to par with those standards. What initially intrigued me to read this book was when I learned that it was Gaiman’s nod to the classic, and one of my favorites, children’s story The Jungle Book. Like Mowgli, the protagonist, Nobody “Bod” Owens is orphaned. However, in this novel, The Jungle Book’s pack of animals is replaced by the ghouls and ghosts of a graveyard. In line with many of Gaiman’s work the book falls under the genre of fantasy and horror but also blended together with supernatural characters from legends and mythology to create Bod’s gothic coming of age tale.…

“Was It A Dream?” written by Guy de Maupassant begins with a man describing his deep love for a woman, when suddenly she becomes sick and dies. All the man knew was that the woman comes home on a rainy day and was very ill. A few doctors and nurses visit and give her medicine, the woman dies shortly after. He is so distraught that he could hardly remember anything people would say to him. They hold a funeral for the woman and bury her. The narrator takes a trip and when he returns to their house the memory of her becomes too much to bare. He visits the cemetery where she is buried and sees where her tomb reads “She loved, was loved, and died.” He mourns by her grave for a while and wanders off. After walking a distance he discovers that he is lost and cannot find where his loved one was buried. Suddenly he hears a noise and the ground beneath him moves. The tomb of a deceased man rises from the ground and the skeleton of the man appears. As the skeleton reads his own grave stone he etches into the stone new words, telling the truth of his own life. The narrator realizes that every person that was buried in the cemetery has risen from the dead and is rewriting the words on their grave stones. Each of the corpses were buried with kind and loving words written on the gravestones, they write the truth of how they were malicious, dishonest, disgraceful liars to their loved ones and neighbors. As the narrator realizes that all of the corpses have come back from their graves he runs to find his love only to find out that she too had rewritten the words on her tomb to say “Having gone out in the rain one day, in order to deceive her lover, she caught cold and died.” He was found the next morning…

The cold harsh winds of the winter whistled through the ranch. Nothing moved, the grounds lay bare the only sign of life was an illuminated window on the far side of the silent ranch. The light came from a small wooden shack; the shack appeared newer than the rest of the weather worn buildings, it also looked better cared for than the other buildings. Next to the shack was a small garden and in it were gravestones. Two were lined side by side, but another sat lonely in the corner of the garden. The lonely gravestone was simple it was made from wood unlike the other two that had been carefully crafted out of stone. Then a creak echoed around the garden and the shack, it was no louder than a whisper but in a place where nothing made a single noise it seemed loud. The door of the shack rolled open, a small elderly man appeared holding a tattered leather bag. He slung it over his shoulder, he took a step outside, and he shivered as a gust of chilling wind passed over him. He looked back into the shack, deciding whether to put a coat on. He briskly emerged from the shack once more still with no coat or gloves or any added clothing but a gun. He took the gun and carefully wrapped it in a piece of cloth he had taken from his trouser pocket. He then lowered his wrinkled hand which clutched the gun back into his pocket. He limped badly stopping and wincing in pain. He soldiered on still clutching the gun in his pocket. He reached the entrance to the garden; he limped through the battered wooden gate, as he passed it let out a loud screech. The elderly man quickly scanned around him looking whether his carelessness had aroused any one from their business. He waited a while then let out a sigh of relief as no one had appeared from there bunkhouse.…
