Reaction about the Article “I’m happy with my teaching job because I know that in my own way, I’m not just teaching my students. I’m also touching their lives and inspiring them,” these are the words uttered by Mrs. V that also came in to my mind when I became a substitute teacher. Teaching is really a noble job because in our own little way can contribute to the success of our students. In little ways we can also touch and inspire their lives to become a better person someday. And above all, we are not just agent for building our students future but we are the builders of the Nation. The article tells about the reality of Filipino teachers nowadays. The author presented that the teachers have the biggest and the most important role played in every nation. However, it remains an idea in our country. Being the most important group in the society deserves a better treatment and must have higher salary than those who are less important but in the Philippines the opposite became the reality. Teaching as an experience, is never an easy job. It requires a person great patience and perseverance in order to survive. I have experienced that the work does not only stop on the workplace but it is always extended even at home where our families sometimes became sacrificial just to finish the work.
Despite the situations the teachers have, it is considered one of the lowest paid job in our country, which became the reason why some teachers would really find a “sideline job” just to provide the needs of the family. Some teachers do tutorials and start a small business just to suffice the needs of their children.
Brain-drain has also become rampant to our country’s teachers. Our country has provided more teachers to other nations without seeing the fact that the Philippines lack teachers to mold the young minds of our own. One major reason why teachers left our country is also to look for greener pastures because other countries pay teachers three times more than what we have here.
In this article I have learned that as future teacher we should not think of having a big Return of Investment financially, but we must think that even how low paid we are, we still have the most important duty for our country and that is to build the nation. At the end, it is not the riches that are being counted in order for us to be considered as a successful person but it is the number of lives we have inspired and changed. This makes teaching a noble profession.
