Research indicates that Latina/o students’ college choices create HSIs, and Latina/o students may be actively avoiding more selective and prestigious schools due to financial concerns and instead choose HSIs due to their proximity to their home (Santiago, 2007). Furthermore, authors argue that HSIs are designated based on their geographic proximity to Latina/o populations, and often are not intrinsically prepared to provide culturally responsive environments for Latina/o students (Hubbard & Stage, 2009; Perrakis & Hagedorn, 2010).…

Early European settlers to the United States immigrated to establish a new nation free from the tyranny of monarch rulers in order to find new freedom on the continent of North America. These settlers came to establish a new society, on that was free from religious persecution, over taxation, and ruling kingdom that limited personal freedoms. These pilgrims soon to be known as Americans found the new opportunities that were not attainable to them in England, opputunities such as freedom, land, and resources. Throughout history, immigrants from every contry in the world have come to the United States to find these same opportunities. "While European immigration generally had a beginning and and end, Mexican immigration has been virtually…
As with many nationalities Hispanic applies to a variety of people and as such we as social workers have to be mindful of our perceptions and any biases. In social workers pursuit to provide services it is vital that they have an understanding of their clients’ culture. The Hispanic population is a collection of a multitude of people from several ethnic backgrounds and as they grow the demand for competent/ diverse social workers increases. Social workers are tasked with building a trusting relationship with their clients and while this is not an easy task, it is especially important when working with this population. Hispanic clients are more likely to feel a provider is judging them unfairly. Those feelings can bring about barriers and roadblocks…
The term Chicano was a word used as a derogatory remark to identify Mexican- Americans of low social class. It wasn’t until the 1960’s when the term Chicano became popular during the Chicano Movement. Chicano was mainly popular among students who performed walkouts, teachers, and farm workers. It was until then that Mexican- Americans took pride of the term that was once a negative remark. Till this day, Mexican- Americans have many alternative identification terms they could adopt like; Hispanic, Chicano, Latino, among others. But the real question is what Chicano means in a cultural, economic, and educational perspective. More importantly, what the term Chicano means to me. Which is what I will be analyzing today with the help of various…
Large waves of Latinos have been immigrating to the United States for about a century. They have caused Americans to create policies throughout the years aimed at controlling and limiting migration. America’s Xenophobic values have caused questions of who is or isn’t a true American.…
My hispanic culture makes up an immense amount of my being, however the bits and pieces I have been able to gather from my school and my wonderful community also play a major role in my persona. As a student, my peers and friends, my teachers, my teammates, and the others who have crossed my path have given me something invaluable. It is all of these people that have taught me an unending acceptance that transcends any nationality, sexuality or other social label. People in their entirety, outside of the things that make them different, all have something incredible to…

I live in an area that has many needs and is desperate for inspirational leaders. City Heights is generally a high crime neighborhood riddled with gangs, drugs, and general violence. A prominent leader in my community that I have had the privilege of working under is Dante Dauz. He works very close with the local authorities and gangs to mediate peace and works to bring resolutions. He is a supervisor of the Alliance for Community Empowerment, which offers a program called UPAC (Union of Pan Asian Communities). The single most important activity I have participated has been working as a leader in this program. . This is the most important activity since hundreds of people were helped, mainly homeless and refugees. Some of the ways in which they were helped was by providing them with food, warm clothing given with warm and consoling heart. Although this activity is…
Many members in our own community show their good side by giving to others or being generous. For instance, Yough Intermediate Middle School, our school, is a perfect example of this generosity. Earlier this school year, the town of Connellsville, Pennsylvania had a massive flood destroying twenty nine homes and injuring nearly three hundred fifty residents. As a school community we organized a hat day. During this day, any student who donated one dollar or more the the Connellsville flood was allowed to wear a hat. Every last cent we received went to this cause. Similarly, my mother works with a lady named Elizabeth, more commonly known as Liz. Liz was diagnosed with…
Volunteering not only helps and benefits one’s community but, in a way, it benefits the volunteers themselves. For instance, I believe volunteering makes a person feel worthy, as if they’ve accomplished something because they made someone else’s life better or they made a change in their community somehow. Volunteering also shows that that person is generous, compassionate, and good-hearted, because he/she is kind enough to give up a few hours of their time and put it into their community. It also serves others without expecting to get anything out of their service. I believe that everyone should give back to their community because volunteering will make your community a more comforting and pleasing place to live in.…
