The protagonists in the book are the Greasers and the antagonists are the Socs. The main characters are Darry, Soda, Dally, Bob, Ponyboy, and Johnny. Darry is tall, muscular, smart and very strict towards Ponyboy. Darry yells at Ponyboy and always seems to expect better from Ponyboy. For example, Darry yells at Ponyboy on page 49, “Where the heck have you been? Do you know what time it is? He was madder than I had seen him in along time. I shook my head wordlessly.” Soda is always optimistic and lighthearted. One of the only things that bring Soda down is the fact that he is a school dropout who works at a gas station. Soda tries to support Pony when Darry is mad at him but tries not to take sides. Soda explains how he doesn’t like when Darry and Pony fight when he says, “It’s just…I can’t stand to hear y’all fight. Sometimes I have to get out or…it’s like I’m the middleman in a tug o’ war and I’m being split in half (page 175).” Dally’s actions, like robbing a store, makes him seem like he is mean and tough but actually he is a very caring person on the inside. An example is when Dally enters the burning church to save Pony and says, “For Pete’s sake, get outa there! That roof is going to cave in any minute.” Bob is rich and undisciplined by his parents who make him feel like he has the power to do anything he pleases. Bob is intimidating to the Greasers like Johnny and Pony because he has the ability to do almost anything he wants. An example of Bob picking on Pony and Johnny is when he orders a Soc to give Ponyboy a bath in the park fountain by drowning him as a sort of cruel joke (page 55). Ponyboy is more emotional than all of the Greasers and takes feelings in to deeper consideration. Pony is not as violent as other Greasers and is very friendly. An example is when Pony went to the drive-in movie; he easily became friends with the popular Soc cheerleader, Cherry. This shows a lot about his personality…

Losing someone close to you can feel like losing a part of yourself. A piece of you goes missing. Imagine living your life with them there and then having them ripped away from you. It really is as horrible as it sounds. In “The Unmothered” Ruth Margalit explains her experience of losing her mother to cancer. She tells about what it’s like on certain days of the year such as, her mother’s birthday, the day her mother was diagnosed with cancer, and her parent’s anniversary. She also gives some memories she has of her mother and what her mother taught her. I, like Ruth, also lost my mom to cancer so I was really able to connect with this article. I also dread certain days of the year but unlike the author I see my mother’s death in a very different way.…
The skills covered in the reading this week are very helpful and the three suggestions I look to incorporate are; previewing, marking, and reviewing. I would incorporate these skills by printing out the book on campus. I will preview my reading before I begin to read it all. There is a short amount of time to learn all the information, previewing helps to identify important information and focus my study. It is easier to underline and highlight on a hard copy, which is a good reason to print the reading. I will review the reading more than once to make sure I understand everything completely.…
During my high school career I have endured many sleepless nights due to my insistence that I read all the books assigned to me. For my freshman and sophomore year this was no big deal. However, after junior year with McGee I have come to realize that trying to read all the texts assigned would be my demise. As much as it pained me, I had to, instead of reading then entire text, read a simple summary. This year I have managed to get by with this same method. Throughout my semester in AP Literature in Room 303 with Timothy McGee, I have enjoyed certain texts more than others, however, the level of importance of these texts is determined not by whether or not I liked the, but rather instead what they taught me and how important they might be on the AP exam. There have been a large number of books and stories that we have covered during our time, but the three that I believe are the most…
In the novel ‘The Outsiders’ by S.E Hinton, we see how hard times bring out the best and worst in human nature. Human nature is basically what people are like deep down. As the characters change and their life grows and gets harder, we are shown their true colours. Some of them change for the best, and some for the worst.…
Jonathan Kozol’s essay on The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society (1985) claims that based on the beliefs of Socrates and James Madison, illiteracy is a moral dilemma. Kozol supports this claim by speculating what a number of tragic outcomes could be as a result of illiteracy. His purpose is to show how a person’s daily life is affected negatively by being illiterate in order to prove that illiteracy in a broad sense is a moral dilemma. Kozol’s intended audience in writing this essay would be the public.…
Being educationally prosper means being able to express through words and create clear picture of that expression. What does reading mean to me and why I write? As for reading how far it can take me to my career and expand my knowledge.…

This is my first week of ENG 105 and so far I’m nervous that how am I going to be able to balance my two classes with my work in the Marine Corps, this week it was ok keeping in mind my personal opinion about writing/reading, the reading for this week somewhat showed me what to expect for the 7 weeks left with this class and since this is an English class I’m sure there will be a lot of essays involved.…
Growing up, reading was hard for me. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had a hard time reading, and that also affected my spelling. This all started in kindergarten. I can look back at some of the papers my mom kept and see that I spelled cat as “kat”. I remember the continuous name calling when I was little of how I wasn’t the best reader in the class and how all the kids would call me stupid. I would come home and tell my mom and she would get so mad. This really hurt my feelings, but that just made me into a tough and strong-willed person, and if someone says I’m too stupid to do something, then I say…watch me. Part of me believes that this is the reason I’ve learned to like reading a lot more than I used to, but it wasn’t always that way.…
The main reason for an annotated bibliography gives the reader a brief overview of an article or journal without reading the whole thing. The purpose of analysis of the annotation should give the reader a short analysis of the source. Annotated bibliography helps in research because the researcher can get a quick glimpse of the subject at hand and determined if the subject written has anything in common with want the researcher wants, without wasting a lot of time reading the whole journal or article. The five articles below can show a person different approaches on discovering how to help themselves by using tools within themselves.…
I have no problem reading something that is assigned to us for homework but, reading as an enjoyment and just for fun, is not me. This semester was a challenge for me, when it came to reading, but in the end, I loved it. Who doesn’t learn new things and skills that you thought was never a possibility. In the process of reading more, I have started reading for 3 hours a day. It is a very hard challenge, I will admit, but it what I have to do, to grow and expand in my knowledge of reading, writing and speaking. The hardest challenge for me when it came to reading, was our reading project. I not the type of person that could choose a book from a list and read it. Here on Earth by Alice Hoffman, was the novel I choose. Alice Hoffman is an incredible writer and I’m beginning to read more of her books, just for fun. My reading is a working progress, and I am waiting patiently for my…
