Some people need others to support them, finding solace from friendship and camaraderie; while individualists prefer to go it alone, shunning the comforting assistance of people and striving to carve their own path through life. But even an individualist would be considered by many to be rash in declaring that people are synonymous to purgatory. While this may seem like a bitter generalization, a broader picture must be taken into perspective. Who are the initiators of conflict, the creators of weapons of mass destruction, the dictators of the oppressed but people? It can seem that the world is teeming with ill-meaning villains who wish only to exploit their fellow man. To the workers of the Guilded Age in which robber barons ruled over the impoverished as kings, it wouldn't seem an exaggeration to declare “hell is other people”. To the Africans who were enslaved unjustly by foreign conquerors and taken from their homeland Hell was other people. Why attempt to defend the inhumane acts committed by malignant individuals on a daily basis? It is precisely the fact that we define these acts as inhumane that provides an answer to this question. We define humane actions as those that have or show compassion or benevolence. Humanity is not represented by only its malevolent actions, but by the sum of its parts, both good and bad. While people can make life a living hell for other people, there are always those who strive to help their fellow men and women. For every man who perpetrates a violent murder, another teacher helps a struggling student. For every woman who lies to her friends, a scientist works tirelessly to cure a debilitating disease. It can be effortless to give in to cynicism and view people as a whole in a negative manner, but to dig deeper and find how supportive and compassionate people can be takes conviction.
