1. Dr. William started her talk with this:
“In this world, there are three types of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.” Explain it and relate it with your own personal experience.
Statics is a science that deals with the collection of data analysed through statistical methods to come up with an interpretation that would eventually lead us to a conclusion. Statistics clearly takes a scientific process to have a reliable result for us to say that statics don’t lie, however, liars do use statistics. For example, a group in our class wants to prove that smoking relieves stress. They get a group of smokers who they know are smoking cigarettes to relieve their stress. They did some generic tests that are guaranteed to show up the specific data needed for the study and presto, 89% of the subjects’ stress was relived through smoking. Most people won’t bother with reading the article the whole way through and will just look at the headline then believe it. This works with anything. Most of the advertisements manipulate statistics for the viewers to buy their product. In their studies, they are using double blind wherein neither the researchers nor the participants know neither who’s in the experimental group nor who’s in the control group that would allow for a chance at being falsified by real life. So, statistics are not lies and statistics don’t lie. But it is the people who use statistics that lie on how it is interpreted for their own interest.
2. What particular portion of Dr. William’s talk struck you the most? The least? Why?
How Dr. Williams explained misleading statistics struck me the most. the trouble with birth control is the part that struck me specifically, because it was well explained with videos shown that there is vague information about birth controls, specifically Yaz, the leading birth control pill in United States since 2006. They are saying that Yaz can help in curing acne, lessening fatigue and etc. but Yaz is associated with increased

Statistics are of value to us all. As learned throughout the readings for this week, they are there to provide us vast amount of data related to health care, including why a drug may be indicated for a certain treatment (or the likelihood of it working); parameters for disease signs and symptoms; and even the prevalence of certain disease(s) within our areas to ensure competent care can be provided for our community. As noted by Nursing Research (2011): “Health information is very often explained in statistical terms for making it concise and understandable (Basic Statistical Concepts, 2011, para. 1).” As established, statistics play a large role in research!! The bad news is, just like anything, statistical data can be misrepresented.…

“When statistics are extremely valuable, they are also notorious for being a means that people use to make false and misleading arguments” (Robert Korn, August 2012). For the probability of statistics, there will be no a hundred percent certainties for making sure it is definitely correct with no mistakes. Statistics give a way to look at the big picture and get a much more accurate way of understanding what is going on in the world than what people can get from individual observations. Statistics can be used, intentionally or unintentionally to reach faulty conclusions.…

This letter offers my complete support of Krasimira Mitreva as she applies for a Master program in your distinguished department. I have known Krasimira as an undergraduate student for the past four years. During that time she was a student in three of my courses: International Marketing, Management of International Investment Projects and International Business Analysis at Varna Free University. In those courses, Krasimira wrote three pieces of long term papers for me, and I recall that in one of them in particular her revisions after a group discussion of her work were substantial and well-focused. I also recall that Krasimira was one of those few I could turn to when I needed to spark discussion; she was never lethargic, uninterested, or unprepared, but always willingly thoughtful and articulate. She provided me with a touchstone for what was best in the class.…
