Reflection: Class Simulation In The United States
Class Simulation Reflection, Year One
In a recent in class simulation, our History class developed a country and Government type to run. Our country, being Secrets of the Oasis, was a Democracy run by a President, House, and Senate. There were two political classifications based on wealth, and property at the beginning of the simulation: Capitalists and Union Workers. Capitalists were wealthy property and business workers, Capitalists produced all of the country’s resources by employing Union Workers. While Capitalists only made up a small percent of the country, Union Workers were more of the majority. Currently, at the end of the first year, the Union Workers run the Government.
I being a Union Worker in Secrets of the Oasis found employment in a local farm producing food units. The food unit company produced either Organic food or regular food, and sold it at the market events to the citizens for a profit. Everyone needed a certain amount of food Units each year to survive. I worked for minimum wage. I also was elected for a position in the Government, as part of the House, under the President. I received a yearly salary of 50

The government of Secrets of the Oasis had to establish fair working conditions, reasonable pay and regulate business, this connects to the development of Unions and when Governments ceased policies such as Laissez-Faire. The Union Worker leadership in the Government connects to class topics like new immigrants and Farmers (often poor) finding a part in the government. The new immigrants would have to find a job and an income, this also relates to the simulation. Lastly, the Government’s policy of distributing wealth to the poor in the simulation is similar to how Benevolent Societies would help out poor immigrants, to make sure everyone could

    One of the main reasons why labor unions did not gain acceptance was because of the many different types of people within the Unions. To start with the acceptance of labor unions wasn’t helped by the popularity of books by Horatio Alger Jr. which talked about poor honest children growing up to be rich people. This narrative, which sold over 17 million copies during the start of the labor movement, went against the ideology of the labor unions, and instead endorsed the capitalistic view of many industrialists (Doc C). This though was not the greatest factor working against the labor unions though, instead the inability of the labor unions to keep out extremist ideologies and unite to try to reach their goals was a bigger problem. This is seen in a cartoon which depicts four men with stirring sticks labeled with the labor union, anarchists, socialists, and the Knights of Labor. These four men were fighting over who gets to stir the labor interest broth. This cartoon thus showing that so many different sects and ideologies caused the common interests of the labor unions to not be effectively portrayed to the American public (Doc D).
