Reflection: My Role As A Directive Leader
My scores from the path goal questionnaire indicate that I am leading to two different paths of leadership. They are directive and achievement-oriented styles of leadership.
Directive style: My role as a charge nurse is to oversee our unit. I am responsible for keeping a high level of patient care, assessing nurses and serving as an educational resource for nurses. I am also ensuring that my directions and expectations are clearly understood by the staff members. More often than not, I do a lot of coaching to nurses to facilitate the flow of work. It’s true that we are achieving the completion of the task but there are times nurses seem to be less confident to do the job on their own. So, I work through the tasks to improve their skills

I do my best to maintain a good rapport with my team members. I would say that they are comfortable approaching me if they need assistance. I encourage them to learn and accept new tasks assigned to them. I don’t stop to make everyone an in-group member in our unit. However, based from my observation, I will find few team members who are not motivated to excel themselves not because the leader isolates them from the in group members but because they prefer to be in the out-group situation. They choose to do less because they don’t want additional responsibilities. Nevertheless, I am a persistent charge nurse, I assign them new tasks to accomplish so they can benefit from the learning experience. To add to their confidence, I assured them with my presence and my willingness to help. It can be tough sometimes on my part because sometimes I end up spending a lot of coaching and monitoring them closely so they can be successful in completing their tasks. I am getting good job results from team members but inconsistently. The outcome of my leader-member relationship may not be of high-quality yet due to my being task-focused. But it is my hope that through this subject course I will be able to adopt or apply the different styles of leadership regardless what type of situation I will undergo at

A nurse can exert leadership without occupying a formal leadership position by taking a leadership stance. In the course, Becoming a Leader in Health Care, it describes leadership as an attitude and not just a position (Reinertsen, 2009, p. 2). Leaders take responsibility for problems and look for ways to solve them. The nurse on an interdisciplinary team serves as a leader by acting as a patient advocate and by coordinating with the other team members to work towards a common goal for the patient. The nurse is instrumental in directing the care and communicating the essential issues in the patient’s care to the whole team. Communication is an essential part to the healthcare team. The nurse communicates with all the members of the team the vital information and ensures follow up care is received. This coordination of care and effective communication leads to positive patient outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.…

Because the majority of the team members have a cautious behavioral style, it is to my advantage to have these individuals break down each assignment and project from the beginning to the end. They are also task-oriented which will bode well for each project. Their strengths are attention to detail and follow through. Lauren has the dominance behavioral style and likes to be in charge that will help to keep the group on track. Those with the cautious behavioral style tend to work at a slow pace and are extremely over analytical. As the leader of the team, my plan is to encourage my team members and recognize them for their achievements. Laura, who is supportive, will provide the encouragement the team needs to complete each task. She will also be strong on follow through and following up with each team member to ensure they are on track to complete each assignment. She is the most people-oriented of the group, so I will rely on her to maintain stability and balance in the group. Each team member will lead a project or assignment each week because each person will share some of the four behavioral styles depending on the nature of the assignments. Each team member will explore the behavioral styles of her fellow team members to understand each person fully on how they think, act, and interact with one another. This will enable each person to…

One way for a nurse to show leadership is one I use quite a bit when faced with being on a team when someone else is leading. It is usually a positive move to back your leader. When they present an idea or a plan, if you back them and show others you support them, others will look up to you, especially if you are one that people look to for advice or support. One day a week I am the charge nurse for my unit. On the other days I’m not charging I still get questions from other nurses who want reinforcement for what they are doing. I am glad they come to me but if it is something that should be decided by whoever is charging that day or our manager I always redirect them to that person. I don’t mind giving…

My team seems to be pretty realistic in what is expected of them, as far as getting training that will father help them move forward. The ultimate goal will require more research to learn about how the team will be able to work together. The recommendation after reviewing all this information is that the team seems to be well rounded, dominate, yet focused, critical thinkers, and socially compatible members. We also came up with professional development plan for team members to reach their goals and still be happy in the work place. Before starting this assignment we all thought it would be difficult to keep every individual happy within the workplace. It would be in the team’s best interest to play to the members strengths and develop the weaknesses. Allowing the cautious member to lead the projects that were extremely detailed oriented and can be completed without much group interaction. The dominate member should be allowed to help with the structure and delegation of the tasks. They have strength in getting deadlines completed on time and are charismatic enough to lead. Anything that needs to be bid on or presented would be perfect for the interactive member. Using this type of formula allows everyone the opportunity to play to their strengths and in addition creates a strong potential for…

Another strategy that a nurse can take to exert leadership is being a proactive problem solver. Others want to know if they have issues or questions that the leader can answer them or at least help them find the answer. If the leader goes out of their way to help them find the answer or help them, that this person (the leader) is someone that can be trusted and relied on. One should also anticipate problems or issues and start looking for solutions or answers as soon as possible as they arise.…

Professional Roles and Values The nurse supervisor has the responsibility of coaching all of her staff members in the importance of utilizing her team members to provide the most holistic care for patients. As a nurse supervisor it is important to recognize when a team member is struggling with this concept and to provide the proper leadership and mentoring so that the most best possible patient outcomes can be consistently realized. The nurse supervisor must provider leadership and confidence to try to guide her staff in utilizing available resources to achieve the goal of optimal patient care and outcomes. Promoting Interdisciplinary Care To promote interdisciplinary care the nurse supervisor must find a way to engage her staff in the concepts of team building and how to utilize each member of the healthcare team and the unique contributions that they bring to patient care. One effective way that I have experienced this personally is with team building exercises. In the clinic where I work as a registered nurse we have weekly team building exercises. These exercises provide a regular opportunity to further get to know one’s co-workers outside of the daily rigors of patient care. At my current job I have participated in races, games and scavenger hunts, among other activities. These activities bring an element of fun and stress relief to what might otherwise be another mundane meeting, while at the same time promoting team cohesiveness and friendship. I would recommend that the nurse supervisor provide time in the weekly or monthly schedule for her healthcare teams to meet together to discuss and participate in team building exercises. Setting aside time for all of the staff in the clinic to meet come together and engage in team building activities will help improve cohesion of the…

All nurses have multiple duties that they must complete during their entire shift. The types of duties can vary during the day and on some days, they can be very overwhelming. This is especially true for a charge nurse. “Charge nurses are expected to lead staff while managing the work systems and processes on their units to ensure that the needs of patients are met” (, 2009).…

Over the last few years I have learned how important it is to understand how everyone is different and what that means in a team. Everyone learns differently and everyone needs different kinds of development and recognition to keep them motivated. Understanding this and beginning to individualize my processes helped to improve so many of my team members. After tailoring myself to fit their needs moral improved significantly. As important as this is, there are issues with this theme as well. You should find a balance between individualizing enough to help your team, and treating others so differently that they would see it as favoritism of some sort.…

Through the course, I learned about leadership different styles and how they emerged and developed from the Trait Theories that focus on the leader characteristics to the Goal Orientations Theories that require collaborative methods between leaders and followers. As I mentioned before, I had always linked the leadership weight to the leader leading characteristics. However, I would argue now that leadership is gained through practice and experience and it is powered through followers. As a school leader, I will use a mixture of leadership theories. First, I will build my school on an ethical basement and then, I will structure a vision that is shared between everyone in the school. At this point of my study, I believe that the type of leadership…
