Reflection Of My Writing Style
I believe the biography I completed at the commencement of this course was thorough and on review it remains a fair representation of myself, and my perception of my writing abilities. As to being an ‘accurate picture’ of my writing that is a different story. I suspect my perception of both history and writing is filtered extensively through the lenses of past experience and current status which result in a kaleidoscope of writing styles. This ever-changing paradigm is clearly evident in all my written expression and as I look back at the biography and other writing samples I see different voices. To explain further one particular past and current prism is the impact of environment, at a given moment. I think I adopt the style and tone (voice) of whatever context I see and surround myself with. Compound this with the influence of favorite authors, books and topics and my writings become an amalgam of styles. It is questionable if I ever have a style of my own, which is the root of my doubt. Talent is difficult to envision, when it is something you truly …show more content…
I have favorite authors whose writing style I readily try (and fail) to imitate. These are primarily fiction authors while the articles I read contain fact-based material related to my career and studies. They frequently collide. Imagine, Jane Austin writing on the implementation of electronic health records or “Eat, Pray, Love” as the underlying plot of an economics report.
This semester, this class has thrown up all these thoughts and I believe all thought is fuel for writing. Therefore, the more fuel, the more writing, and hopefully the better the writing. Routine practice of any skill is supposed to build muscle memory, perhaps increased mechanical speed from so much typing results in thoughts and ideas hitting the page in a less filtered more genuine way. Is the first thought the best? Probably not, but it is a launch

The author, Christina Hoff Sommers, 2003 article entitle “Men-It’s in Their Nature” vividly discusses cultural rearing and social assumptions regarding semi-outdated preconceived notions of stereotypical male masculinity and its impact on an ever evolving modern society. She uses several types of rhetorical elements which are hyperbole, comparison/contrast, and paradox in this article.…

Style is one of the most important elements in any written work, perhaps as much so as content. The old saw "It's not what you say, it's how you say it" seems to directly apply. Many novels have told us a story we've heard before- many stories seem universal to human experiences, locked in our collective racial memory. These stories…

I have learned that revising your writing makes it way better than before. You find your mistakes and realize you can replace words such as “bring to” to a different high vocabulary word such as “cease”. I know now that there is no way to make your paper perfect. There will always be a word, words, or sentence you could change. In addition, I’ve gained a better understanding on passive and active sentences. Once I was done writing my paper, and began to reread it I found some passive sentences. All I did was revise the sentence which helped my writing flow better. Initially, I read the first paper I wrote for the Quarter 1 Writing Assessment and I noticed that I didn’t follow the directions completely. As I read on, there were many simple sentences and not many transitional words.…

Over the course of this year in English, I think my writing process has excelled the most along with my overall writing. In the past, I have used similar techniques to develop a final essay, but, this year, I have begin to rely more heavily on planning out and slowly chipping away at my essays and papers. I believe also that because of this planning the strength of my writing as a whole has grown. Personally, I do not think that I grew in my vocabulary usage. Overall this year, I grew as a writer in ways that I would not have predicted.…

The art of writing is a unique skill that requires the writer to have great flexibility and be open to improvement. Some may consider themselves a “perfect writer”, when in reality, no one is, and will ever be. Writing is a process that requires one to continuously build on skills learned in previous situations, applying new techniques and strategies to future writing projects. Different settings require different writing styles, and with that being said, one must be willing to change their writing skills to suit the requirements of their current setting. In the following essay I will reflect on past writing assignments, identifying my best and worst writing courses, strengths and weaknesses as a writer, and my opinion on why writing may or may not be beneficial to me throughout my career.…

In school, we have been required to write many papers on many different subjects, some being timed and others not. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me, especially when put on the spot and told to write a paper in a certain amount of hours. When I write, I like to have time to think and plan my essay. Being able to revise and edit the paper makes it even better than it was before. When I am given the time to plan my essay, the writing has more depth than when I am put on the spot and have no time to think about what will go into my paper.…

From the beginning my academic career, I have developed a little interest for passion for writing and literature while my interests for math and science are constantly increasing. In this spring, my perception about writing changed significantly due to the combination of science and writing in my Writing for the Science class. This class helped me develop essential skills for professional writing and explore various areas of my interest in the field of science. Furthermore, it improved my ability to communicate clearly while simultaneously developing important rhetorical skills such as analysis and argumentation. As the Semester has progressed, the work required from me became more complex and demanding. However, with each assignment, I viewed writing from a different perspective, incorporating feedbacks of professor Fine and applying the contents from the lecture to become a better writer.…

Annie Lamott’s Bird by Bird is an auto-biography that contains not only life lessons but writing lessons as well. For example, she teaches us that the first thing you do when you writing is not get caught up in the small stuff. Here, she mentions that you need to get all your ideas on paper and then go from there. This in turn, leads to what Annie Lamott calls a shitty first draft. I agree with her and need to start working on that because one of my problems when it comes to writing is actually letting the words flow. Unfortunately I always get stuck on phrases if they don’t sound right. Another tip that Lamott provided was that you have to have passion for what you’re writing about. This tip also helped me because I have certain…

    My Writing Style Analysis

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…

    My Writing Style Essay

I’ve been asked many questions about how to write, when to write, and even what to write. Well, in each of these and many more questions there is a simple answer and that is just to write. There are as many reasons not to write, but it only takes one to change that absurd thought. Now let’s get down to what is the question behind the question that is the answer of all answers. What will it take for me to be a better writer? In other words, what will it take for me to write like a famous author and receive fame and fortune? Once again there are many who say they know the answer to that, but the only one who can truly help you become on par with those who you admire and receive that big payday and people lined up for your autograph. Sorry…

Audrey Hepburn once said, “Why change? Everyone has his own style. When you have found it, you should stick to it.” Audrey Hepburn was able to see that each person in this world is different from the rest. Everyone has a unique style, especially in writing. Hemingway is known to constantly use very short sentences whereas Faulkner is known for his consistently long sentences. Each person has his or her own style of writing and my writing style is different from everyone else’s. In my paper “The Will God,” through my style of varying sentence length, varying sentence beginnings, repetition and writing in an active voice, I was able to achieve my intention of successfully planning my long-range goals while keeping the paper interesting.…

Writing varies from a text message to a novel. Writers often have a difficult task in creating a piece of work that truly identifies the meaning of good writing. Every good writer usually starts with the basics such as genre, audience, rhetorical situation, and reflection of the piece. Throughout this semester, we have gone through all of these key terms in great detail with each new assignment that has come our way. In doing this, not only as students but also as writers, we have come to create our own theory of writing. Every writer has a different theory of writing though most are very similar. Now, at this point in the semester after doing countless journals, in-class exercises, and final assignments, I think I have figured out my own theory of writing.…
