Reflection Paper 1: Lorde – Royals For my first reflection paper I chose to use Lorde's “Royals”. I've heard this song numerous times on the radio and on television. Although I heard it so often I never really took the opportunity to really focus and listen to the song. As with most music I come across if its not from an artist or genre I prefer I just don't pay much mind to it. Since beginning this music class I listen to almost all music differently. Just as I did with this particular song now I pay attention to minute details and focus on the musical elements to help me better understand this type of music. This song by Lorde in my opinion kind of invokes a calm, but a steady build up of expectations. The beat along with the rising pitch of vocals does that for me. As I sat and listened to the song with my eyes closed as to avoid any distractions I paid close attention to the rhythm of the song and found it to be a duple meter with a higher note at the end of the succession of rhythmic pulses. I found the melody to be conjunct where the frequency of sounds are closer together rather then far apart. I find the song to be without any tonal tension and more consonance sounding. The texture of the song is polyphony with the unique sounds combine to form different lines which simultaneously create the music. I hear what I believe to be a lot of electronically produced sounds. It isn't easy to determine just based of listening as a lot of electronically produced sounds can mimic the actual instruments sounds very well. If I was to assume I would say its not the actual instruments being used to create some of the sounds I hear. There is clear percussion instrument sounds, as well as some strange robotic sounds in the background. The drumming seems to be the over all basis of the music, with different levels and pitches of drumming combined to create the overall effect of the song. There is an almost hollow effect used at the beginning of the song. Just a few

I also noticed a little bit of polyphony in there when the chorus started to sing lower and then start to get higher around “He shall reign for ever and ever”. I believe where I detected it, along with the dynamics taking an effect. Then the around the ending the homorhythmic melody came back because of the settings from the trumpets and the timpani setting the mood to complete the performance. I also found out that this would be a SATB chorus, which is a 4-part chorus and…

    Taylor Swift Analysis

I found this song to contain many musical concepts to create pleasing sounding song. The song features a homophonic texture by using Taylor Swift's vocals and accompaniment with her guitar. The beat and the rhythm in this song are very pronounced, the steady repetition of the majority of the same phrases. However she does differ in the throughout the song, for example at 12:14 the beat becomes noticeably spread apart from the previous sections. The beat continues to keep the time of the song up but there appears to be less beats per measure. The texture gives the song a simple and clear feeling and melody. The homophonic texture in the song highlights the melody played. The melody in 22 appears to be disjunct as her vocals range from low to high. In the video 12:52 is a good example of Taylor Swift using the disjunct melody. I feel that her use of melody gives the song depth and provides an upbeat feeling for the listener. I found that the main instrumentation in the song were from the string family, the guitar, the electric family, for the keyboard and use of her voice. I found that the pitch of the song remained at a relatively average speed throughout the song. Overall, I feel that Taylor Swift beautifully executed her song by using musical elements and her talent as a…

When I first listened to this song, the first musical element that I heard were the drums. It give me a sense of vibe that goes through you with every hit which makes a good thing inside you. It starts off with a crash symbol and a bass drum hitting together, and then all you hear is just the bass drum hitting with the ride symbol hitting every now and then. This helps the audience get engaged into what the song is going to be about and what happens next. After a few measures, you hear the lead acoustic guitar. It starts playing the melody that you hear throughout the whole song. The instruments that are playing make you feel sad and happy at the same time. So mostly the main three musical elements that you…

    Ribs Musical Devices

Though the layering of instruments and sounds, Lorde presents her growing fearful anxiety of growing old in Ribs. While there are few instruments and musical devices at play, Ribs brilliantly picks and chooses precise points to insert or remove sounds for effect. As a whole, the music is supporting the lyrics; it enhances the singing and feelings of Lorde, and stirs the listener emotionally. A song directed towards an old friend, Lorde reminisces about the past and expresses her worry for the future. Further, the lyrics contain specific examples drawn directly from their experiences as friends, though thick and thin.…

The song I interpreted for this paper is “Shake Me Like A Monkey” by Dave Matthews Band, which is on the Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King album. I chose this song because I have been a huge Dave Matthews Band fan ever since my friend introduced me to them in middle school. They have always had a jazzy/rock very unique sound which is unlike most of the bands out there. The band has the normal members of a typical band, guitarist, drummer, bass, vocals, but they also have a saxophonist along with a trumpeter and sometimes other guest musicians which is why I am drawn to their unique sound.…

The piece of music I chose to analyze is a rap/hip hop song called Mama by the rapper Tupac. This song is so different from his many other songs because it isn’t his usual graphic and vulgar type of music. This is one song that really gets to me and make me really understand what he is talking about, because I truly love and appreciate my mom also.…

Predestination is a Christian doctrine, which falls under the larger philosophical rubric of determinism. Calvinists especially adhere to the doctrine of predestination. There are two aspects to the Calvinist belief in predestination. The first declares that God basically has ordained everything that occurs, or will occur. In regard to salvation, the Calvinist code of predestination is more specific: Scripture teaches that there are certain people – ‘the elect’ – who are chosen by God, through Christ, to be called to Christianity, and thus be saved for eternity. Calvinist interpretations of predestination often get into trouble over issues of free will; indeed, some interrogate the notion of God’s omniscient power to create all events and actions, given the fact that humans clearly possess the power of free will.…
