Reflection: Shing
Day 5 (25th March 2015)
While Shing did most of the teaching today, I assisted and followed her lead during the class by offering guidance to the students seated at the back. When I directed the kids, I still felt a slight distance between me and the children. However, I’m positive this will change with time.

One of the drawbacks in the lesson was not enough hands-on interaction between the students. It was mainly teacher to student. For an ELL this may be confusing if she is not checking in with the ELL student, making sure they are understanding the material. She did not once go around the tables and check for understanding with any of the student except for asking question that were needed to be answered.…

During the semester, we have had many opportunities to interact with people outside of school. Most of them were aimed at our futures, helping me discover the paths I would want to choose in the future. The careers expo was a major event when we had the opportunity to talk to career experts from all different industries from Coles and Woolworths to major university representatives. This helped me explore some career paths that I had not even thought about, the strengths and weaknesses in some careers, learn more about university courses and what each course requires and even suitable part time jobs. One of the conversations that was very useful to me was with a woman that worked at the Flinders’ University. I talked to her about the medicine course. She told me about the different options Flinders’ has to offer to its students. I also got to know that I can do the medicine course in Charles Darwin University and graduate with a Flinders’ degree and also that doing the Flinders’ course in Darwin is quicker time wise. I also got to know that taking the IB will make the medicine course easier for me. Talking, to other university representatives, I also got an idea of other courses that I could consider. I also saw some companies that offered part time jobs. Talking to these people at the careers expo was a very good experience as we all learned new information and I did consider some courses and plans that I did not even know about.…

If I am approachable and willing to listen and respond to how the child is feeling, whether it be about learning or their physical needs the child will feel more confident and valued as an individual. This will then build trust between me and the pupil and as a whole class their communication between me, other pupils, parents and colleagues will encourage cooperation. Being polite and staying relaxed and calm will make the pupil feel comfortable and teach this behaviour is a positive way to communicate. I must give my time equally to each pupil so they all feel they are equal and no one feels left out. Taking into consideration a child’s age and abilities when talking to them will help the child understand me and themselves better.…

Waiting eagerly in our school garden, I was about to meet the five fourth graders that I was going to be grouped with for the rest of the year. I was a bit casual about the “meet and greet” because I could not determine how well I would fair with these little children. I could not predict whether these kids will enjoy my company or loathe it. After a lengthy thirty minute wait, the kids began to slowly flood onto the field. I was introduced to each student one by one and the first thought that ran through my mind was “How am I going to connect with someone who’s so different?” They were so reserved and quiet and I found it troubling having to find something to stimulate these them. My mind quickly jumped to all the basic questions to try to…

During the lesson, I wanted to make sure that the students had many opportunities for interaction between each other and with the teacher. This is why I incorporated group work and had the teacher walking around to monitor and also having her provide models for the students. When the students are given opportunities for interaction, they can learn from each other and help each other with challenging subjects. This will be both beneficial for the students who are helping and the students who are learning. The one who is helping will grow stronger in their understanding of the material because they have to explain it in a way that is comprehensible to the other students. Because the students themselves know what makes concepts easier to understand, the students who are struggling will learn the concepts in a different way than the teacher would express them.…

First, the presence of the teacher can have an impact on how well students learn and contribute to class discussion. I learned that by making eye contact and interacting with all students, rather than a select few, I am creating a comfortable environment in which students want to be involved. Secondly, I learned that when creating lesson plans sometimes less is more. I often get excited to teach a topic and relay too much information at once. Children, especially lower school, need time to process and make sense of information and I have come to realize that I need break down some of the bigger topics into smaller ones to help with…
