What are your weaknesses as a writer? Prior to this class my experience with academic writing had encouraged if not required a passive writing style. Due to this, I have developed wordy tendencies that can make my writing sound long winded or unclear. By identifying the term “passive writing” and ways to avoid it I am now able to remove some of it from my writing. A simple way this can be done is by avoiding the use of conjugated verbs such as “tion”, “ing”, and “ence”. Aside from passive writing, another area that I tend to struggle with is using a voice that suits my audience. I often use the same voice universally even in casual writing. Out of all the things done in this class what benefited me most were the readings. Though I was familiar with writing persuasive arguments breaking them down with frameworks such as the Tolumin model helped me structure logical arguments with greater ease. Reading past CSC essays out of voices also gave assistance to my writing by addressing many of the pitfalls students encounter, thereby preparing me to avoid similar mistakes. The actual writing assignments in this course taught me just how much academic backing can improve a persuasive argument. Compared to my taking a stance essay, the final I wrote was actually supported with strong empirical studies and facts. Having these present gave my argument more weight and tied my propositions
