I began my writing courses at UCI with Writing 39A. It was a course with a captivating array of ideas, strategies, and knowledge which gave me my first insight into the world of rhetoric. “Diction”, as my professor always emphasized, I learned, is very important to bridge the gap between me as a writer and my audience. It is important to persuade the audience to adopt your point of view or at least for some time help them see the world from through your eyes and this is where diction plays a crucial role in connecting with the audience by “showing” them what you mean. I am so glad that it gave me an insight into rhetorical analysis and fairy tales. I would’ve never imagined that the same Cinderella story I used to love has words with connotative power. This course shaped my perspectives about fairy tales and the research done for the RIP helped me become aware. I improved at transitioning and paragraph formation as my professor taught me to generally start a paragraph with a key statement as a summary for the rest of the following statements and then provide evidence and explanations. The idea of genre and audience became very clear to me after this course. Thus, writing 39B was the next step forward to becoming a good writer.
These writing courses have helped me both at and outside UCI. I could do a research paper in one of my GE classes and achieve a good grade only because of the skills learned during 39A and 39B such as smoothly being able to transition between paragraphs, paraphrasing, diction and citing my sources correctly. Apart from doing well in my essays in other classes, I have been writing articles for the New U. I see myself improving with every new article I write because of the strategies and ideas learned in my writing courses.
