Reflective Essay: Why I Give Back To College
Senior year has been immensely stressful; I find myself overwhelmed with work without understanding why I persevere through it.Taking the time to think, I concluded that my efforts revolve around my drive to give back what I’ve received from others; this is exemplified in my education, volunteer experience, and daily actions. At a young age, my parents pushed me to strive for good grades to be accepted into college; I rolled with it, not questioning why. Now, I realize they didn't want me to be in the situation they grew up in; they worked in poorly-paid, laborious jobs. They’ve sacrificed so much to ensure their first son would be successful. I cannot thank them enough, all I wish to do is grant them an easy life when they can no longer …show more content…
I am thankful for programs like Dean’s Future Scholars that’ve presented me with the opportunities and vital information to thrive in college. If not for their volunteers, I would be struggling to focus on my life after high school. They’ve inspired me to give back to the community, there are people in this community who haven’t had the same opportunities as others, I wish to be there and be a helping hand in bringing them up. I now volunteer with multiple groups like the National Honors Society to be a positive force in the community, I will altruistically give back to the community because they improved my life and it is morally correct to assist those in need. Moreover, I aim to give back to the Earth, I’ve already started my journey by leading the Eco-Warrior club at my school to make Reed High more environmentally friendly. I feel that humanity should aspire to maintain the Earth for generations to come. As I hear about the exploitation of our planet it angers me knowing that people abusively strip the Earth of her resources; we cannot go rampantly destroying the same home which provides us with life. I am driven by the moralistic need to preserve the Earth which has given us everything. We must give back all that we’ve taken from the

Humans are not just specks in the universe. Our lives have purpose, and we have to make a decision every day to pursue that purpose. All too often people diminish the impact a single person can make by rationalizing that our lives represent less than a blink of an eye in the greater scheme of eternity. However, our actions, words, and accomplishments do not die with us. We leave a legacy that impacts others. And this inspired me to create a senior project that would last even after I graduated. I not only wanted to create a project that left a positive impression on my community, but also changed my heart to focus on others. Ultimately, I decided to create the 365 Venture, where I committed to volunteering 365 hours in the year 2016 and document…

The results of my hard work and the positive impact it creates on the people around me is a reward in itself. One of the most memorable instances in which I contributed to the greater good was during the summer of my freshman year where I volunteered at West Pines Community Church. That summer, myself and about 50 other volunteers set out to make an impactful difference in the…

I can still hear the echo of my mother’s voice when I told her I was leaving my job to go back to school full time. In her loving demeanor and ever so softly toned voice, she said, “If you would have focused on education instead of your social status back then, you would be a doctor by now.” I could not believe my ears! However, I knew exactly what my mother meant and sadly responded with, “you are right mother.” I was twenty seven, a mother of two, and about to sacrifice so much for higher education. This was not going to be easy but I was determine to do it for myself and my family. In the past, my parents stressed the importance of education and did all they could to support us through it. However, my priority as a teen was my appearance.…

There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school.…

Throughout high school, I had always envisioned myself in attending Texas A&M. There are still some extra steps I need to take but I know what my goals are and I’m going to do whatever it takes to achieve them. I know it’s not going to be simple but not impossible. My parents came to this country to work hard and better their lives for my brothers and me. My dad works too hard seven days a week and I look at how tired he is all the time. I want to be able to go to school, pursue my dreams, obtain my dream job and help other people. I want my parents to see that them working so hard and coming to America and leaving their entire family was worth it. I want to witness the happiness in my dads face when I walk across that stage at Texas A&M.…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

The reason I choose APUS was because I was looking to pursue my degree with the luxury of flexibility. By flexibility, I mean simply time. I know college could be a scary decision, more high school with overdue papers and stress, I’ll pass. This was because the only scope on college I had were the constant reminders of tons of useless work that goes unnoticed. The idea of being in a classroom so large the professor has no Idea I exist. I know what you’re thinking, why not a community college? Well, community college would have been great, if I had the funds. This leaves me with a loss of words as well as ways to continue my education, or so I thought. I was looking for help and my mother asked me a simple question that I thought was ridiculous.…

Spelman College’s motto, A Choice to Change the World, mirrors my goal as a member of this intellectual community. During my first year at this institution, I dedicated myself to several hours of community service. I found that this was a vital part of my intellectual growth as both a student and person within society. This year I volunteered for several nonprofit organizations, however I dedicated most of my time to the Atlanta Community Food Bank. Before volunteering for this organization I was not quite sure how I would be able to make a significant difference in my community. However, when I volunteered for this organization, I was able to tremendously help people in Atlanta. Likewise, this experience opened my eyes to the increasing…

The years I spent in middle school and high school have opened my eyes to the field of Social Work. I volunteered whenever I got the chance. I was in Student Council and from that, I donated a lot of my time to help with that and other organizations. Throughout those years, I was rewarded my senior year with an award for the most community service hours. My father works for the Michigan State Police, and through him, I volunteered with a lot of organizations through NCRESA. Halloween Hallow, Santa’s story book, and Kids Day were all different events that I volunteered for an absolutely loved. Now, I am a junior and I have still kept busy with volunteering. My freshmen year, taking SW100, we were required to do 15 hours of community service. I volunteered my 15 hours at the Marquette Jacobetti Veterans Center. Volunteering there has very much impacted my life. Whenever I went to see the veterans I was so thankful to them. Listening to their stories has been one of my favorite volunteer memories. In fact, my older sister Jennifer and I are thinking about going and talking to the volunteer coordinator to see if we can come back and continue. Another activity is Northern’s Make a Difference Day which has always been a great experience. Seeing how grateful those who we raked yards for were was truly wonderful. I will continue with Make a Difference Day! My sophomore year, I signed up through NMU’s volunteer center…

The transition from adolescent to adult is, for most people, incredibly difficult. During my senior year of high school, this transition has changed me for the better. When I was a junior, I did not really care for my grades. I thought going out and hanging with my friends mattered more than my grades. I wanted to have fun in my junior year, and that I cared more for my friends rather than my grades. Later, my parents started to see my grades at the end of the year and told me that they were disappointed to me. My parents said to me that if I do not have good grades for my senior year, they would not help me pay for my college tuition. I decided to be more responsible with my homework, because I wanted my senior year grades to be as good as…

At the end of my senior year my father gave me the same speech he had given my two older sisters. You can continue to go to school or you could start the work process. I had seen the outcome of both sides, my oldest sister decided work was her choice, and my second oldest sister decided to go to college. I never thought I would choose to continue my education but I did. I would be the first in my family to leave home and go to school. I chose to continue my education because I wanted something different for my future. Coming from a low income family my parents could only provide us with the necessary things in life. I was truly grateful for all my parent’s hard work, but I…

Our precious Mother Earth is the one who suffers the most because of the bad practices we do in our daily lives. We do not even consider how badly it will affect her as long as we are happy with what we are doing. We throw our garbage to places that are not supposed to be thrown at like the different bodies of water and in this case, we pollute our water and there is little clean water for us to drink. We are using up our non-renewable resources in such a short time without even thinking that it takes a very long time for nature to reproduce it. We are also cutting young and old trees without even planting new trees for replacement and because of this, flash floods and landslides happen. We continue using appliances that emit chlorofluorocarbons, which damages the ozone layer that protects us from the harmful UV rays. These are only some of the proofs that we are very selfish. We are selfish in the sense that we think only of ourselves and don’t even care about Mother Earth where in fact she is the very reason why we live peacefully and happily. We have to do something in return to Mother Earth for all of her sufferings. After all, we owe everything to her. Now is the time to repay her. However, how can we do this? We have to be contented, aware, disciplined and responsible so that we can take care of her properly and lessen her sufferings. First, we have to be disciplined enough to do what is good and what is bad for our environment. Second, by being aware in the sense that we have to know if what we are doing have good or bad effects to her. Third, be contented on what she has given us and do not want anything more that will cause you harm. Finally, be responsible for all your actions. Remember that what you do to Mother Earth comes back to you. And one more thing, Love Mother Earth and she will love you back.…

Anyways, this is Ma. Emelyn C. Malabanan speaking in front of you all. I have a simple life and I grew up in a not so rich family but my parents Rafael and Emelita Malabanan did their very best to raise us. They are the two most important people in my life, the reason why I’m striving hard to finish High school up to College so that I can give them back all the goodness that they have given to me. Someday I wish to have a profitable life because I want it to share with them and give them the best life that they didn’t imagined even in their wildest dream. For me, they are the rival teachers and even if they don’t give grades I know that they made me pass because I’m their daughter and that’s how much they love me.…
