Link Crew Reflection
There is not a single feeling greater than the one you experience when you make a positive impact on someone else’s life. Thankfully, I was able to experience that in my junior year. My high school has a program called Link Crew that is designed to help alleviate the anxiety of freshmen’s transition in to high school. When I signed up to get involved, I never realized how strongly it would affect not only my life, but also the life of everyone else who came in contact with it one way or another. Junior year was my first year involved in the program. At first, I was not sure if I would be able to handle it because it was a club that required a large time commitment. I was already involved in my advisory board, student council, and also I had been on the varsity softball team for both years prior to my junior year, along with working anywhere from three to five days a week. It was a very busy time in my life for a while, but I soon came to realize that Link Crew was completely worth it once I started seeing the effect it had on my school. On the first day of school we got assigned our “crews”, which were the group of freshman we would have the opportunity to spend the whole year …show more content…
After going over everything on the agenda, our Link Crew coordinator announced we had something we needed to celebrate. She read a letter from one of our guidance counselors at the school. In the letter she described how a parent emailed her a few weeks before school started to tell her that her daughter has anxiety when it comes to new beginnings. She said her daughter stayed home from school her first week of middle school because she was so nervous. However, her first day of high school was a magical experience for her. The parent explained how her daughter was bouncing in her seat at the dinner table describing what a great day she had. Our Link Crew director announced whose group she was in, and sure enough, it was

When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

In the end, link crew has subtly forced me to become a leader who strives to connect, encourage, and inspire positive change. Being a link crew leader has really helped me developed my questioning and relationship skills. I honestly feel like I have grown because of this program, and strongly believe that more people should become more involved in it. It is still amazing how this is the only program where everyone in the school is connected to it in some way. I am very glad that I became a link leader, and I will carry these values and memories with me throughout the rest of my…

Throughout my high school experience, the one memory I remember the most that helped me the most would have to be the time I interned at a local non-profit, Lettuce Live Well. I decided that I needed to encounter more challenges in my life; as if my life wasn’t challenging enough. I decided to work with a non-profit because I knew I would get all the experience I can get while getting to work head on with the local community; this was what made it all worth it. The one place that I found I can get the most experience while still connecting with the local community was an organization call Lettuce Live Well.…

Something that I have done that I believe has made my school a better place would be joining Link Crew. Link Crew has allowed me to help the freshman as they join the school. A big influence I had to join Link Crew was that I had a great Link Crew leader that really helped me when I was entering freshman year. Being in Link Crew, I have met many freshman entering the high school that I am able to help just as my Link Crew leader did for me. As a Link Crew leader I started off with a number of students in a group that we meet during their orientation. By having this group, I attend for them to get comfortable and know that they have peers along side them that are adjusting to what they can expect in high school. Throughout the school year, I…

Another example of helping my school community is setting up for Winter Formal. Key Club is a club that accumulates all of the values and ethics of service. As of this year, I have become a part of this organization. Now I like to sign up for as many volunteer opportunities as my time permits, and this club provides me with many of those. I have a lot of fun every time I contribute to these events and believe that these opportunities improve me as a person.…

I was so focused on the academic aspects of school my freshman and sophomore years’ that i wasn’t active in any of my school’s clubs or activities. I finally decided to get more involved my junior year and I joined nearly every club, participated in every activity, and even went to as many sports events as I could have. I currently am a six year member of the National Beta Club and have held the positions of Vice President of Fundraising and Senior Representative throughout my high school career. Not only am I a leader in the Beta Club, but I participate in the Trailblazer leadership program with the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance and my school’s freshman mentor program. I also joined the TRIO Upward Bound program whose ACT prep helped me to obtain a 22 as my highest ACT score at the time allowing me acceptance into my school’s ACT top 20 Club. Although it was hard with my many extracurricular activities I somehow still managed to finish my junior year with a 3.8…

The Boys and Girls Club of America helps thousands of Americans each year as a daycare, escape from home, way to meet new friends or to eat a sustainable meal that they wouldn’t be able to get at home. Another way that the Boys and Girls Club benefits kids is by having organized sports where the players can develop competitiveness, teamwork and become coachable. As someone who volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club I am able to experience all of the good that goes on both within and outside of business hours. As I wrap up my high school career and go on to the next stage in my life I often find myself looking back at not only those who helped shaped me into the person I am today but also the extracurricular activities I participated in. The Boys and Girls Club is one thing that continually pops into my head with the activities I partook in as well as the children and adults alike, without these experiences I would not have devolved my love for basketball, been so willing to give back to the community, or have been showed the do’s and don’ts of parenting.…

One of my most defining experiences to date has been my involvement with the colorguard squad at my school. The colorguard squad is an auxiliary unit that is part of the marching band. We perform with the band at Friday night football games during halftime while spinning flags and rifles to the music. To me, colorguard is so much more than that. Freshman year when I went to tryouts I was terrified. I did not have any friends trying out with me; I was walking into a gym full of older girls whom I had never met. To my surprise, being on the squad for the past three years has been such a defining achievement during high school for me. Without the squad I would have had a completely different experience in school. I learned the value of hard work…

In high school, I joined Zonta Club to be involved with school and community. Zonta Club gave me an opportunity to reach out to people that had helped others and inspired other students to do the same. One of the unforgettable moments was when I volunteered in a fundraiser to help Alzheimer's disease. It was an event, called Rock-a-Thon, where kids and adults were together to raise awareness those who had the disease. Everyone was participating in the activities that were available in the event. There were games that both kids and elders could play with. They showed stories about the importance of being aware and helping those with Alzheimer’s disease. The event had shaped my views on giving back to the community. Service was not only about giving back, but it is also about learning from others. The joy that the people had even when there was a sickness in their life was incredible. It made me realize how I was fortunate to be living a life without the disease. The fundraiser had made me learn about the people in my town and the obstacles that had to endure and were still enduring. The event had impact the involvement and the appreciation I have over the…

Having the opportunity to make new, diverse friends around the community impacted me as a person. The people I met not only included the people I served, but also included the people I worked alongside of me in the food pantry. Since I volunteered at the same day and time every week, I was able to become familiar with many new people. In fact, many of these people were even able to connect to my life. One day I had a conversation with a man I volunteered with numerous times whose name was Steve.…

During the summer before my senior year of high school, I was involved in one of the most influential opportunities I had ever encountered. I was given the chance to volunteer my time at Schneck Medical Center. I chose to volunteer in the rehabilitation department; this helped fuel my desire to want to become a physical therapist. While at the rehabilitation center, I got involved in multiple positions that taught me how to be a better leader and how to successfully use teamwork. Working in the office taught me leadership roles. While in the office, I had to check the patients in for their appointments and paged therapists for their appointments. This position showed me how to take charge and make sure that things in the rehabilitation center…

There are so many opportunities here to join amazing organizations and become part of something that is bigger than oneself. Next semester, I have quite a few organizations and events that I am planning to be a part of. First of all, the big event for Dance Marathon is on February 3rd and 4th. The big event is when students all come together for 24 hours to celebrate all of the fundraising and the hard work they have done all year, and besides that, they come together to celebrate the children who have survived cancer and to mourn the ones who have not. Within this 24-hour event, dancers are not allowed to sit or have any caffeine. Dancers are there to dance for those who cannot. The second organized that I am going to be a part of next semester is the University of Iowa’s Mobile Clinic. The Mobile Clinic is a year round clinic that travels around the surrounding areas of Iowa City to provide free health care to those who otherwise may just go without. I will be a volunteer at the clinic and will be there to help take vitals and check people into the clinic. This opportunity is amazing as I will be helping those who truly need it and cherish what we are doing. The third thing that I plan to do next semester is to volunteer at the University of…

    Bridge Role Model

No matter how old we get we find that we always carry someone in our hearts that we revere. This is also true for high school students. To me, one group of people I admire are the Bridge Students. Every year one group of students gets chosen and exceed the expectations of them and do things that they are most likely the first in their families to do; these kids are role models. I have served as a role model in a many ways, as a girl scout, as a mentor, as an officer of multiple clubs, but only one way could make my heart feel as good as probably the humblest of all of my role model experiences, being a big sister. In my family were all very close and I may only have one sibling but I also have three cousins that call me their big sister. These kids for a long time were the reason I got up every day. I’ve always done my best to help them grow up right and making sure that they always knew I loved them. As a bridge student obviously I wouldn’t have the same kind of relationship with the summer academy students as I do with my family but I will care about them and their well-being the same as I would my family.…
