When I first arrived at high school, I was extremely nervous. The school was huge and there was not a familiar face in site. Although I was nervous, staff and students did their best to create a positive learning environment. Going into my sophomore year, I received the same positive energy from the staff and my peers. My guidance counselor, Ms. Hunter, helped me to prepare and offered me the opportunity to enroll in…
From field trips, to tutorials, our class has been extremely interactive with one another. We have gone on a total of 3 field trips. One to Pacific Lutheran University, one to UW Tacoma, and one to Evergreen State College. Each trip has opened my eyes for possible future options. During each trip I learned of the college campus, the history, and the programs within the college. While learning these things, I had to ask insightful and specific questions. This really has…
For instance, in the spring 2016 semester I volunteered with the American Red Cross and I encouraged other residents to volunteer as a community service program. Another program that I executed was titled, "Can you survive?" The program took place around Halloween, so I included a mysterious theme to make it more entertaining for residents. The program consisted of deadly scenarios (i.e. the zombie apocalypse and a plane crash) to teach residents how to effectively work together. This program, and several of the other educational programs I facilitated, let residents learn in a fun and educational setting. Through these programs I developed strong and amicable relationships with residents, which helped me to better assist them when they were…
Mentoring and working with troubled youth at Academy Park High School was a really interesting experience. Prior to this opportunity, I felt as though I would be able to change those I worked with and give them the same mindset that I had. After working with these students and getting to learn about their lives and their challenges I soon realized that one mindset is not the only mindset that one should have. I quickly realized how much of an impact one's background could have on their entire view of life. This was a really amazing volunteer opportunity that really helped open my eyes to…
I would like to take the opportunity to be a link crew leader because of how the Link Crew affected me as a freshman. Not only did they answer any questions we had, but also as a sophomore I still find myself referring back to my link leaders. The feeling of knowing someone around you when you are in a sea of strangers is not only a helpful resource but also reassuring. My freshman year I learned that the link leaders obtain some very special qualities. Link leaders are fun, outgoing, determined, and consistent people and I believe I also have these characteristics. I can use these qualities to hold myself responsible for caring and tending to the needs of those younger than myself.…
You will need to be aware of the issues which may be important to the children and young people and make time to talk to them about these issues. Make them feel like part of the school by communicating positively with them and getting involved.…
I was awarded a wonderful education at Windham High School, but beyond the information I retained, I also learned what is important in life. At first, I thought all that mattered was the clothes you wore, what makeup you had on, and who you were friends with. There is more to life than all that. I love helping others and my induction into the National Honor Society allowed me to do just that, especially in my four service projects I had the opportunity to lead and be a part of. I try to please people and make sure they are always happy and I now know it is most important to give back to the community who gave me so much.…
I really appreciate the closeness between the students and teachers so the professors can truly get to know you. I know it sounds corny but I always wanted to be a leader since the 9th grade you know to inspire people and make them believe all things are possible with hard work and all that jazz. One of my biggest achievement in life is doing community service. I can't wait…
I needed to help others to become involved in their school. I enjoyed attending games and other activities. This showed me that school pride was more than wearing your school colors. I was a Falcon! People knew who I was and expected me to act a certain way. Later, I was given the leadership role of cheer co captain my junior year and captain my senior year. This allowed me to develop leadership qualities. I not only was responsible for making sure my squad had information about games, but I was a person they could trust. I was the only four year cheer leader on the squad. I had the knowledge of the program and understood what it felt like to be an underclassman. These unique experience have allowed me to learn compassion. When you have compassion you build life long…
School Boards are important because they help to keep the school district on track with the requirement of the state. It is also to make sure the students that reside in that district are getting the most out of their education. The school board makes decisions that affect the district both monetarily and educationally. They decide whom to hire, what programs to add or drop, and also decide safety measures to protect faculty, staff and students alike.…
Creating a fun, vibrant learning atmosphere! To create a strong connection with the community and student body! To ensure all children are being treated fairly and appropriately!…
In my first high school, Freedom, I took advantage of the performing arts and had partake in a choir as well as beginning art class. Both of those classes helped me to hold myself at a higher standard and to showcase something I had been working on for others to see. My choir class helped me to learn to work with larger groups and to communicate properly with my peers, whereas my art class had helped fuel and recognize I am more than a drowned student among a sea of people. I learned there is creativity and individuality in everything.…
Creating a positive learning community it is not an easy job. Teachers need to be prepared for anything in the classroom. Having a positive community setting can help a lot, because students need to know that teachers expect more from them. Teachers need to make children be aware of their expectations, so they can work at their highest potential, because if the teacher does not do that, the child will feel that it’s not even worth doing the assignment or activity; whatever the case may be. A classroom learning community also needs to make the student comfortable, students need to feel that school it’s also about having fun and making friends.…
On another note, being the change is fine but wanting everyone to join in can be a struggle. Goslin wrote “if students and teachers aren’t conscious about the tidiness of the school or aren’t inwardly seeking a positive role model to inspire them to act, the leader’s symbolic act is lost” (Goslin, 2012, pg. 43). In other words, everyone has to be on the same page. Yes, the individual could do it by themselves, but wanting others to want the same and have the same vision requires understanding and modeling. Having a role model that you know very well can lead you to the conclusion of “I should do the same because they already are.” That’s when you know someone has…
