I was born in a Chinese educated family, the main language which is spoken in my family is Mandarin, second language, which is only spoken by my parents is Hokkien. They do not speak English because English was not being emphasis as strong as today during their school time, the medium of communication of them was Malay. So, English can be considered as the third language which I acquired, and I was exposed to English only since 5 years old, from my kindergarten teacher.
Since primary school, I took English as the toughest subject among all the other subjects because English has grammar. I cannot really understand why there are so many rules to be followed in essay writing. All the “participle” and “continuous” tenses confused me; can’t everything just be categorized into “past” “present” and “future”? Life still going on and I kept ignoring the confusion, until I graduated from form 6, and chosen English Language as my degree course.
By taking Structure and Grammar of English 1, I could complete my foundation in grammar in a very detail manner. Every parts of grammar are being explained and emphasis on by Miss Cheng, my lecturer, who never let me relax in the class because she will throw questions to everyone after every lectures and she won’t tell you the answer until you find out by yourself. Due to her effort, tenses, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunction and determiners, now I know what are all these words refer to. Last time, I do not know how to differentiate adjective with adverbs. So now I know, adjective is used to describe things and, adverbs to describe action (verbs). Apart from describing verbs, adverbs also could be used to describe time, place and direction, manner, means and instrument. I never learnt all these before I entered the classes of Structure and Grammar of English 1. Besides, I love tutorial exercise which is given by Miss Cheng so much because it is really an essential book for me to practice grammar completely apart from just

As nurses, we encounter ethical situations everyday regarding patient care. How we handle these situations promote equality while seeking rationality. After reading the two case studies presented, I will discuss in my reflective journal how the ethical issues were presented, the steps taken in the decision-making process to ethically address the issues, the lenses used and how these lenses influenced the decisions made, and also how these can relate to the workplace. The Baird Decision Model is a five step process that guides us through that decision-making process when making ethical decisions.…

We started the session with an icebreaker which was very specific. I found this very challenging as I wanted to say more than the one point that was allowed. The ‘Get/Give’ activity was very thought provoking as it allowed me to really think about what it was I actually wanted from the course and what I felt I could contribute to the course. Sue explained very clearly that the assessment tasks should be related to my subject, learners and environment. This I found a very useful piece of information and will try to remember this while writing assessments. We then looked at reflective practice and between us came up with a definition. It is about describing what we have done and then acting upon it. We then looked at each section of a reflective journal and thought about what we would write in each section. I chose ‘What surprised me was...’ To this I answered that I was surprised by the fact that a lot of the skills I already have can be transferred into teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.…

This week’s video topic in unit 5 covers weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery. The intern discusses two different procedures as an approach to weight loss. The three main things I learned from this video lecture. First, there are differences between the two gastric procedures, which was one of the issues new to me. Gastric banding segments the stomach into a small pouch by banding the stomach at the top allowing food to move slowly to the bottom part of the stomach. The size of the opening can be adjusted and the procedure is reversible. The second procedure discussed is the gastric sleeve. The gastric sleeve however is not a reversible procedure. A small surgical pouch is made in the stomach, thus removing the remaining portion of the stomach. Both procedures creates a pouch causes a decrease in appetite and reduces food intake. Also, nutrient absorption is decreased as well. Second, the surgical candidate should consider both the health issues and long term outcome as to the best fit for bariatric surgery. People who are severely obese, have obesity related health problems, and have tried unsuccessfully to most other weight loss methods would be likely to consider bariatric surgery. This area is what I liked most about the presentation. There are positive long term outcomes besides weight loss, such as, decreased risk of diabetes, sleep apnea, hypertension, cardiovascular mortality, and gastro-esophageal reflux disease. What I did not expect was the variety of complications that can occur post-op. I noted only a few, such as, internal bleeding, spread of infection, and organ damage from leakage of gastric content into the abdomen. One thing I learned from the video that I will be able to use in the future, is the intern emphasized, nutritional intake is important both prior to and after surgery. Prior to surgery, Zinc and Vitamin C for wound healing, along with Vitamin K for blood clotting. Whereas afterwards,…

There are many skills I will need to be successful in this class. One of the skills I will need is how to edit videos and photos carefully. I will need this skill when working on creating images for our print material. A strategy I can use will be to watch the ‘how to’ videos ahead of time and practice on sample images before I start my images for my project. This way I will be prepared when we start the video editing and creating the final video.…

Among all the subjects and disciplines throughout the history of human beings, I believe psychology could be recognized as one that holds together the three attributes of complex, fun and amazingly close relations with life. The use of the word “amazing” stems from the initial impression I had on psychology before I set out the journey to know about it and I barely thought those theories could be so easily applicable to reality. After two months’ learning, I found that a considerable quantity of phenomena in daily life, which people usually turn a blind eye to, actually hides psychological theories behind for explanation. That is why people also call it the study of human’s mind.…

In this assignment, I am going to reflect on the previous Fresh Mart project. Before carrying out the Fresh Mart assignment my expectation of this project is that we might not successfully sell off all the fruits and vegetables as our selling day was on a Monday and Tuesday was a Wesak Day which is a public holiday where I assume most of the students might take off on a Monday but in the end we successfully sold off all the fruits and vegetables, not only this me and team mates also expect to earn a clean profit of one thousand and as expected our team really did earned a clean profit of one thousand. Furthermore, in between of the Fresh Mart project I did faced some problems, starting of the Fresh Mart project some of my teammates weren’t participative enough as some of them were group thinkers, they were not willing to give out their own ideas or opinions but instead rely on other team members ideas but in the end we did came out with some good ideas together and asked for votes and all the teammates participated. Besides that, I have developed a few skills of Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities from this Fresh Mart project. The first skill I learnt is interpersonal skills, where during this Fresh Mart project I developed an ability on getting along with my team members and carrying out the task together as a team, also I learnt how to work together and cooperate with my team members such as brain storming on creating our Fresh Mart project theme as well as collaborating with my teammates during our selling day. Not only this but also learnt and understand leadership skill. Second skill I learnt and enhanced during Fresh Mart project is communication skills, where this assignment taught me how to communicate with different level of people at any situation such as approaching to the lecturers and tutors or the foreign students. Also, I gained knowledge on ways of how to persuade and attract customers to buy the fruits and vegetables. Lastly, the…

What, then, is grammar? Batstone (1994: ix) remarks that grammar is ‘an immensely pervasive phenomenon’. People used to accord the rules of grammar a very special position. These rules have been taught since schools began and may not be questioned. They describe ways, in which people can write and say, and anyone who had sufficient knowledge of these rules means that he has learned the language.…
